Speaking with Dr Tim Bradstock-Smith, BDS , AACD , BACD Cosmetic Dentist from London Smile Clinic, I asked him some important questions when it comes to whitening your teeth at home. Dr Tim Bradstock-Smith gives Metro the low-down on the best products and practise when it comes to teeth whitening. (Picture: Metro/London Smile Clinic) What is the safest way to whiten teeth? The best option is dentist-supervised whitening. At The London Smile Clinic, we use most of the leading brands such as Zoom, boutique and enlighten whitening. It is the safest and most effective, especially in the UK where peroxide levels are regulated. A good alternative is dentist-provided take-home trays. Gentle maintenance whitening toothpaste for surface stains can also be used on a day-to-day basis (won’t dramatically change colour). To keep your teeth white, avoid lemon juice, charcoal scrubs, or strong DIY peroxide mixes , they can damage enamel. If you do want noticeable results without harming your teeth, go through a dentist. How white can teeth realistically get? Most teeth can lighten 2–8 shades, depending on your starting colour and the method used. Teeth aren’t meant to be paper-white. Healthy natural teeth are usually slightly off-white or ivory. Professional whitening can make teeth noticeably brighter, but still natural-looking. To obtain a very bright ‘Hollywood white’: That’s often veneers or crowns, not just whitening. Stain type does matter too; Yellow tones respond well, whereas grey or internal staining is harder to fix. You can get significantly whiter, but not artificial, glowing-white unless you change the surface (like with veneers). Brush, rinse, floss and whiten. (Credits: Getty Images) How long do teeth whitening results last? Typically 6 months to 2 years. Results fade faster with coffee, tea, red wine, or smoking. Good oral hygiene and occasional top-ups make it last longer. Is dentist‑led whitening better than at‑home kits? Dentist-led whitening uses stronger, controlled gels and professional checks, so results are more reliable and risks (sensitivity, gum irritation) are lower than most at-home kits. Does tooth whitening damage enamel? No, properly professional whitening does not damage enamel. Overuse or very strong DIY products can cause temporary sensitivity, but true enamel damage is rare when used correctly. Professional whitening from the dentist is always the best. (Credits: Getty Images) What side effects should I expect from whitening? Common side effects are temporary sensitivity, gum irritation, or patchy colour, usually mild and short-lived. How can I reduce sensitivity when whitening my teeth? To help reduce tooth sensitivity during whitening, it’s useful to start using a desensitising toothpaste containing potassium nitrate for one to two weeks before treatment and continue using it throughout the whitening process. It’s also important to space out your whitening sessions rather than applying the product every day, as this gives your teeth time to recover. Try to avoid very hot or very cold foods and drinks while whitening, as these can increase sensitivity. If needed, you can switch to a lower‑strength whitening product. If sensitivity becomes strong or lasts for more than a few days, it’s best to pause treatment and speak with a dentist. Why do my teeth look patchy after whitening? It’s common for teeth to look patchy or uneven after whitening, and there are a few reasons this can happen. Some areas of the enamel may have built up more stains than others, so they whiten at different speeds. Teeth can also become temporarily dehydrated right after whitening, which makes them appear blotchy until they rehydrate. Natural variations in enamel, such as white spots, can also look more noticeable during the whitening process. These effects usually even out within a few days; however, if the patchiness persists, it’s a good idea to see your dentist for advice. There are plenty of at-home kits that will give you whiter teeth in weeks. (Credits: Getty Images) Is whitening safe if I have fillings or crowns? Whitening is generally safe even if you have fillings or crowns, but it’s important to know that these restorations will not change colour. Only natural tooth enamel responds to whitening treatments, so any existing fillings, crowns, or veneers will stay the same shade. As a result, they may appear darker or more noticeable after your natural teeth become lighter. For the best cosmetic result, it’s usually recommended to complete whitening first and then replace or adjust any visible restorations so they match your new shade. Can whitening remove brown stains and deep discolouration? Whitening can be effective at lightening brown surface stains, especially those caused by tea, coffee, red wine, and smoking. However, deeper or intrinsic types of discolouration—such as grey tones, staining caused by trauma, or marks related to certain medications—often do not respond fully to whitening alone. In these cases, alternative cosmetic treatments like veneers or composite bonding may be needed to achieve the desired result. Dr Tim Bradstock-Smith in action at London Smile Clinic. (Picture: Metro/London Smile Clinic) Why do some teeth whiten faster than others? It’s normal for some teeth to whiten more quickly than others, and several factors influence this difference. Yellow‑toned stains typically respond faster to whitening than brown or grey discolouration. Teeth with thinner enamel may show results more quickly, while thicker or denser enamel can take longer. The position of the tooth also plays a role: front teeth often lighten sooner than canines, which tend to be naturally darker. Additionally, any previous dental work, such as fillings or crowns, will not whiten at all. Individual factors like your enamel composition and the strength of the whitening product can also affect how quickly each tooth responds.
