Murder probe is launched after body of Royal Engineer, 64, is found in woodland and family pay tribute

Published: 13:47 EDT, 3 October 2026 | Updated: 14:00 EDT, 3 October 2026 A murder probe has been launched into the death of a Royal Engineer, 64, whose body was found in a woodland.Graham Pennycook was found dead in the woodland near the polo field, in Ludgershall, Wiltshire, on September 24.Wiltshire Police were called to the area at 3.41pm over a concern for welfare and two hours later his body was discovered.Detectives initially treated the death as unexplained, but following a post-mortem examination, a murder investigation was launched.A cordon remains in place at the crime scene alongside an increased police presence as the murder enquiry continues. Mr Pennycook's family have since paid tribute to the man who 'enriched the lives of everyone he met.'His wife Jacky said: 'Graham was a husband, brother, uncle, friend and, as a Royal Engineer, a brother in arms for over 32 years.'With his cheeky grin, no room was ever empty or quiet when Graham was in it. He enriched the lives of everyone he met. Graham Pennycook was found dead in a woodland in Ludgershall, Wiltshire, on September 24 Wiltshire Police were initially called near to Perham Down over a concern for welfare'Solid and dependable, he was a pillar of strength, trusted by all and always on hand to help family and friends whenever needed.'Kind and generous, but also principled, he would question the things he thought needed to be addressed in a conscientious manner.'He had many loves and interests, but family and friends were always his priority. Renowned for the number of different cars he owned as well as a love of watches, and no day out was complete without an ice cream.'He is missed by us all. Please respect our privacy at this time.'The Royal Engineer's family have been made aware of the investigation's development and are being supported by specialist officers.Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker said: 'Our investigation is in its early stages, and we are working at pace to establish the circumstances of this man's death.'Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Our priority is to establish exactly what has happened and, to that end, I am urging any members of the public who might have information to come forward.'We understand the concern that this will cause in the local community and I would encourage anyone with questions or concerns to speak directly to our officers and staff in and around the local area.'It is critical that we hear from anyone who may have been in the area of the polo field and surrounding woodland on Thursday 24th September between 9am and 6pm who may have noticed something out of the ordinary.'Do YOU have a story?
