Monsoon rain to hit East, Central India on Friday as new system moves in

Several parts of eastern and central India are likely to receive heavy rain on Friday, September 11, with Odisha, Chhattisgarh and coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh expected to see the strongest spells, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).The rain comes as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal continues to influence weather over parts of the country.On September 10, the system was lying over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas, with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 9.4 km above mean sea level. (Photo: PTI) ODISHA, CHHATTISGARH AND ANDHRA PRADESH IN FOCUSThe IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Chhattisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on September 11. Other areas likely to receive isolated heavy rain include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Vidarbha and West Bengal and Sikkim.Odisha could also see thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph at isolated places. Similar conditions are likely over parts of Marathwada, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and Vidarbha.Coastal Andhra Pradesh is expected to see the most notable wind activity, with an isolated thundersquall likely to produce winds of 50–60 kmph. (Photo: IMD) BAY OF BENGAL FUELS RAIN ACROSS INDIAThe current weather pattern is being driven in part by the low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal.The IMD said its associated cyclonic circulation extends high into the atmosphere and tilts southwestwards with height.A trough also stretches from north Haryana across Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand towards the low-pressure area over the Bay.Such weather systems can help draw moisture into the atmosphere and support rainfall over neighbouring regions.The forecast follows a wet spell across parts of eastern India. (Photo: PTI) In the 24 hours ending on the morning of September 10, heavy to very heavy rain was recorded at isolated places in East Uttar Pradesh, while heavy rain occurred in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar.The latest forecast indicates that rain will remain active over much of eastern India in the coming days, with Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Sikkim among the regions expected to continue seeing widespread or fairly widespread rainfall.- EndsPublished On: Sep 10, 2026 19:30 IST
