Monsoon gets help: Most of India to face more heavy rain on Sunday

The monsoon is set to remain active across several parts of India on Sunday, August 9, with heavy to very heavy rain likely in pockets of central, northern and southern India.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast another wet day for many states, with the newly formed low-pressure area over south Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha expected to keep rainfall active across eastern and central India.The latest system formed on Saturday, August 8, under the influence of a large area of circulating winds over the region, and is expected to move west-northwestwards, helping carry moisture further inland. (Photo: PTI) WHERE WILL IT RAIN MOST?The biggest concern on Sunday is the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand. Several other states are also likely to receive heavy rain.These include Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, East Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep, southern interior parts of Karnataka and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Delhi-NCR, Haryana and Punjab are likely to see scattered rain on Sunday, with isolated heavy spells possible. (Photo: PTI) Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also possible over parts of southern and eastern India, including Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha.Sunday's forecast comes after widespread rain across several regions on Saturday.The IMD recorded very heavy rainfall in East Rajasthan, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, West Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Kerala in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on August 8.The wet spell is not expected to end on Sunday either.The IMD's week-long forecast shows rain continuing across eastern, central, northern and southern India through the coming days, although the intensity and coverage will vary from region to region.- EndsPublished On: Aug 8, 2026 19:30 IST
