MKBHD's hair is still safe after Elon Musk says Tesla's Cybercab service won't reach California until 2027

Andy Wenstrand/SXSW Conference & Festivals via Getty Images Tesla CEO Elon Musk offered a fresh Cybercab launch timeline — and MKBHD's barber can breathe a little easier.In an interview with the state-run China Global Television Network, released on Saturday, Musk outlined when he expects the company's two-seat, steering-wheel-free vehicle to launch more commercial rides.The Cybercab "will soon be operating commercially in Florida, in Nevada, and a couple of other states," he said. "And, probably, by the middle of next year, it will be operating commercially in California."That does not technically settle Marques Brownlee's famous Cybercab bet. The techie YouTuber, known as MKBHD, said in 2024 that he would shave his head on camera if Tesla matched its promise to sell the steering-wheel-and-side-mirror-less vehicle to regular buyers for $30,000 before the end of 2026.For years, the internet has run wild with that boisterous wager, especially on X, where users have posted AI-generated videos of Musk shaving the YouTuber's head for the better part of two years.Even Musk has chimed in, writing on X after the Cybercab's commercial launch in Texas that MKBHD "really wants to shave his head."Musk's new timeline — especially his admission that California won't see a commercial robotaxi release until next year — adds a new wrinkle for those hoping to see a bare-headed MKBHD. The company also has to resolve an NHTSA audit query into its self-certification that the vehicle meets federal safety standards.In an early September video, MKBHD reiterated that he was pretty confident that he would win the bet, saying that Tesla was still several steps away from putting the aggressively priced vehicle in Americans' driveways."My hair is safe, for now," he said in the video. "And honestly, I feel pretty good about it staying good for the rest of the year." Representatives for MKBHD and Tesla didn't respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.
