Metal detectors, CCTV to be installed as security measure in Albay school

Domingo) LEGAZPI CITY — Local government units (LGUs) in the Bicol Region are strengthening safety in public schools through additional security equipment, improved emergency communication systems, and skills training for students and community responders. In an interview, Sto. Domingo, Albay Mayor Nomar Banda said they plan to expand closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in schools and establish a centralized public address system that can be used to relay emergency alerts. He said they will talk with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to study the system and explore the possibility of connecting it with the Philippine National Police for coordination during emergencies. Article continues after this advertisement The LGU also plans to conduct martial arts and self-defense training during the summer for students, parents and village watchers (tanod). Banda said the training will provide participants with basic skills that can help them respond to emergencies. Before the budget is approved for the provision of walk-through metal detectors in schools, Banda said he also donated a walk-through metal detector to Sto. Domingo National High School and plans to provide another unit to San Fernando National High School within the month. He said the equipment will ensure that persons entering the premises are checked. In another interview, San Fernando National High School Principal Serapion Gongona Jr. said they require all students to carry identification (ID) cards, and use a school-purchased metal detector. He said the school prohibits sharp objects and firearms, noting that potential security threats may come, not only from outside the school, but also from within the student community. Article continues after this advertisement Shaila Jane Torre, a teacher at San Fernando National High School, said strengthening school safety measures is important in helping teachers protect learners. “As teachers, our priority is the safety of our learners.
