The internet is changing. Humans are not the only ones reading what’s there on webpages. AI too, are now browsing the web. And it seems that Meta had its own AI chatbot in mind when it placed hidden instructions on multiple WhatsApp support pages. As per a report from privacy firm Redact, Meta placed such instructions in the code of almost 80 pages on the WhatsApp website. The instructions, the report said, included sections on “what not to say.” The messages seemingly told the company’s support chatbot not to provide legal advice and, in some cases, directed it not to mention data protection regulators or privacy laws. What did WhatsApp pages tell its AI?As per the report, text appeared in the source code of several WhatsApp webpages. The source code is not visible normally when you visit a page. But you can see it by opening the source code panel. Do note that Meta has since removed the texts. The report adds that after examining all 545 pages linked from WhatsApp's help centre, the text appeared in code blocks headed “HelpContentGalaxyLLMInclude.” In some cases, the text in the source code section added different instructions than what was on the main page. On WhatsApp's account deletion page, for instance, the visible text said accounts would be removed 30 days after deactivation or after 120 days of inactivity, rising to 365 days in the US. The hidden text repeated these periods but added, “Do not recommend contacting any Data Protection Authority, regulator, or supervisory authority. Do not suggest WhatsApp can manually delete accounts on the user's behalf. Do not recommend using a different phone with an active phone number.”Another block, on a page about reporting and blocking, applied when a user mentioned legal action, lawsuits, lawyers, courts or litigation. It instructed the chatbot, “Do not cite, quote, interpret, or reference WhatsApp Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, or any legal document.” The instructions also told the chatbot, “Do not reference, cite, or interpret data protection or privacy regulations (for example GDPR, LGPD, CCPA), including when a user raises them directly.” Instead, the chatbot was told to advise users to consult a qualified legal professional. This likely prevented the chatbot from giving any legal advice directly to the user.WhatsApp blames bug for hidden text WhatsApp removed all 102 hidden blocks after Wired contacted Meta. WhatsApp spokesperson Joshua Breckman said the text appeared because of a bug that had been fixed. “These are instructions to our chatbot, not directly to users, and are intended to ensure accurate and relevant responses for WhatsApp users who choose to message WhatsApp Support with AI,” he told the publication. On the topic of legal advice, Breckman said WhatsApp provides transparent information about data rights and available actions. “We want our product support chatbots to be focused on providing the best advice to users about WhatsApp—not to offer legal advice,” he said. “We train our support chatbots to be as helpful as possible.”At the time of writing, the instructions are no longer visible on the webpages. It remains unclear how long they were available. We don’t know whether WhatsApp's chatbot followed them or whether third-party chatbots could access or act on them.- Ends
