ON Manchester United’s website, this academy hopeful’s biography – like most others – is low key. It contains no description, and simply records he has zero appearances, zero goals and zero assists. But in the era of social media, the starlet is already one of the most talked about players at OId Trafford – despite being just 15. The carefully curated feed confirms his position as a United starlet and also a Nike athlete, having signed for the American sports brand aged just 11. Elsewhere on the internet, United fans have already declared him the future of the club. That excitement has only increased last month when JJ made his debut first team appearance in a pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid. That magic has fuelled the expectation that at some point this season JJ is destined to become United’s youngest ever player. The record is currently held by David Gaskell who came on in the 1956 Charity Shield aged 16 years and 19 days. So who is JJ Gabriel? And is he destined to hit the same heights at United which will see him become as famous as other academy graduates such as Sir David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Marcus Rashford? The Sun have spoken to several sources within the football world to get the lowdown on the boy billed as the Premier League’s next superstar. And the view is firmly that JJ – who has played for England’s youth teams despite qualifying for the Republic of Ireland, Trinidad and Tobago and Cyprus through his parents – will be a star at Old Trafford and beyond. One who has watched his development at United said: “JJ might only be 15 but he has magic in his boots. Football at the top level is decided by moments, and JJ has the ability to settle games with his skills. “He is an outstanding player and everyone recognises that – his coaches, the club and his family. “The only issues now are how to ensure he develops, but doesn’t get pushed into the spotlight too soon and it has a negative impact on his game.” Another source said they believed JJ had the talent to play for United’s first team, but is not yet physically developed enough to compete at the top level. They said: “JJ is a brilliant player, but he’s not big enough or strong enough yet. It’s no surprise – he’s 15 years old. There is no sense in putting him in a game where he is at risk of being kicked into the stands. But once he has developed, there will be no stopping him.” JJ’s story began in in Enfield, north London, on October 6 2010 when he was born to mum Natasha and dad Joe O’Cearuill, a former footballer who enjoyed a lower league career with the highlight being two caps for the Republic of Ireland. By nine, videos of his incredible close control skills were going viral on YouTube, leading to fans dubbing him “Kid Messi”. One YouTube clip which pits JJ – aka “Kid Messi” against another young prodigy dubbed “Kid Ronaldo” has been viewed more than 30 million times. Aged 11, JJ’s family moved north and Manchester United were only too happy to welcome the schoolboy into their academy with open arms. United’s Carrington base is used to looking after talented players with the likes of Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Butt, Rashford and Mason Greenwood among those who have come through its doors in recent years. Ever since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson, the club has always tried to dampen down expectations of young talent. This is because of the 1.5 million children playing organised youth football in England, only about 180 players, or 0.012 per cent, ever play in the Premier League. But JJ is different – partly due to his talent, and partly due to social media creating a buzz around the boy. His family appear to embrace it, with United’s rules around parents posting footage on social media frequently ignored to show off JJ’s latest feats, to the annoyance of some. Proud parents are often guilty of celebrating their child’s success. And for JJ’s parents and sisters – there is a lot to celebrate. He made his debut for United’s U18s group in April 2025 aged just 14, marking his debut by scoring two goals in a 13–1 win over Leeds United. In August 2025 he looked on from the director’s box for the league opener against Arsenal and was later pictured with Sir Alex Ferguson when United played West Ham at Old Trafford in December. Two months later he began occasionally training with the first team and on December 9, he became the youngest United player to score in the Youth Cup tie, in a 1-0 win over Peterborough at Old Trafford. International recognition followed in March 2026 with JJ making his England U17 Debut against the Faroe Islands. While this doesn’t commit him to play for the Three Lions, the FA have been keen to ensure his family know how highly regarded he is. Back at Old Trafford, JJ was named in May as the U18 Premier League player of the season after dominating the youth circuit, bagging 26 goals and assists in 24 games. Despite only being 14 at the start of the campaign, he also won United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year and is the youngest ever to do so. This summer saw the frenzy around him increase as fans desperate to see success return to Old Trafford clamoured for JJ to be given a chance. He was called up to the first team squad for the first time during pre-season friendlies and got eight minutes against Atletico. He has continued to train with the first team, with a source saying some of his “moments are frightening”. But coaches and manager Michael Carrick believe he is not yet physically ready for first team football. Each time JJ receives a knockback, his football does the talking. Carrick was in attendance for United’s U21s last month as JJ scored an audacious lob and bagged two assists against Ipswich as he made his Premier League 2 debut in a 5-0 win. The boss said of JJ’s performance: “He’s obviously got a really big talent. He’s trained with us quite a bit and is getting experience all the time. He’s physically adapting to each step that he makes, and we’re just continuing his development.” He bagged another goal last week in a 4-1 win over Leicester, making it two goals in two appearances in PL2. Temperament wise, few at the club have concerns about JJ’s ability to deal with the hype around him. A source said: “JJ is genuinely a nice, quiet lad. He has been home schooled so a few people have concerns about him in social situations, but he has interacted well with the first team. “They know he is a child and look after him, and JJ does well with them given he is 15. At games, he interacts with fans and oftens stays behind for a long time to sign autographs and take pictures with fans. “United want to protect him from over exposure, but in the modern world of social media that is increasingly hard to do.” The biggest challenge United face now is to ensure that JJ and his family believe the best place for his footballing future is at Old Trafford. All parties know the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Manchester City would all be delighted to sign him. So at the end of this season, United will offer him a scholarship tied into a professional deal, which could turn JJ into a teenage millionaire. A source said: “Doing the JJ deal will be difficult. Too much money too soon can ruin a player. But the clubs also has to consider JJ’s potential and reward it. They have a huge balancing act to perform.” Meanwhile, fans will eagerly await United’s 3rd round Carabao Cup game against Brighton on 18 September at Old Trafford as that fixture presents the best chance of JJ making his first team debut and writing his name in United’s illustrious history.
