Gaudreau responded nine minutes later, sliding home the rebound after his initial redirect attempt was blocked, but the Flames pulled away in the middle frame. Suniev restored Calgary's lead at 5:45 of the second period when he slapped home a one-timer set up by Frost. Gridin then extended the lead to 3-1 with another power-play goal three minutes later, benefiting from a fortunate bounce when his shot ricocheted off a defender's skate. Farabee scored two minutes later, burying an open chance from the left circle after receiving Mikael Backlund's cross-ice feed on the rush. The assist was Backlund's 610th career point, moving the Flames' captain into fifth place on the franchise's all-time list. Samoskevich buried a one-timer from the left faceoff dot for a power-play goal with 1:45 remaining in the second period to make it 4-2. Coronato provided the perfect response, burying a top-corner shot from the slot 39 seconds into the third period to restore Calgary's three-goal lead.
