Mass Effect has always been, and likely always will be, played from a third-person point of view. It fits into BioWare's view of the RPG, a perspective that's as synonymous with the genre as slinging spells and clearing dungeons. Of course, that isn't to say that there can't be first-person RPGs (there are, after all, rather famous examples), as that would be ludicrous. Rather, it is merely to state that BioWare seems fairly set in its third-person ways, and that is perfectly fine. However, for those who would love an RPG like Mass Effect but played from a first-person perspective to truly immerse oneself within its alien worlds, the choices are few and far between. Fortunately, there is a Mass Effect project that completely fixes this problem, as it takes the core experience and thrusts it into a first-person perspective. Everything you know and love about Mass Effect is present and accounted for, but this time, you'll get to see it all up-close-and-personal. With Mass Effect's future looking precarious, it makes sense that fans would turn not just to the older games, but also find new ways of making them more enjoyable. The modding scene for Mass Effect has always been impressive, keeping the spirit of the original trilogy and even the critically panned Andromeda alive while tweaking, improving, or completely overhauling core mechanics and concepts to offer a whole new perspective on the same familiar yet beloved gameplay. This is, of course, very much true for Mass Effect's first-person mod, which completely shifts the player's point of view from the traditional over-the-shoulder third-person perspective to a first-person HUD. It is rather astounding just how much of a difference it makes, and how impressive it all still looks, even despite the original games absolutely not catering to this style of play or perspective. Frankly, one may be fooled into believing that this had always been an option that was merely switched on, rather than brute-forced through the power of talented modders. The mod, titled MassFPS (LE3), is the third iteration, with the original version having launched on Nexus Mods back in 2023. It can be downloaded from its dedicated Nexus Mods page and requires the ME3Tweaks Mod Manager (which can also be downloaded from Nexus Mods) as well as a copy of either the original Mass Effect trilogy or the Legendary Edition collection. Once it's all installed, you will be able to play the entirety of the Mass Effect trilogy from a first-person perspective, ostensibly turning it into a Halo RPG-esque experience. Sure, there are games like Mass Effect that offer a first-person perspective natively without all of the fuss of downloading mods. However, MassFPS not only provides that experience with relatively little hassle, but also completely recontextualizes an old game, allowing people to almost re-experience it for the first time, a feat that is highly sought after and extraordinarily rare. If you've been searching for a new way to enjoy Mass Effect, then this first-person mod may just be the one for you.
