But while Midnight Spider-Man’s Peter Parker is enduring some of the worst torment he’s ever experienced, Marvel Comics has sweets to hand out to the mainline Earth-616 Peter. On October 21, Marvel Comics is treating The Amazing Spider-Man’s Hallows’ Eve to a Halloween-themed one-shot. If you don’t already know who Hallows’ Eve is, she has a wildly unprecedented backstory and basically puts Chameleon out of a job. Who Is Janine Godbe, Ben Reilly’s Lover? Janine Godbe’s origin story is winding and convoluted, and it begins fairly darkly. She first appeared in J.M. DeMatteis and John Romita Jr.’s Spider-Man: The Lost Years as a waitress at a diner, and Ben Reilly is instantly smitten with her—love at first sight, essentially. They’re drawn to one another, as if they were each other’s “oldest and dearest friend,” or had “known each other in a previous life.” It’s ironic that Ben would claim that he hid behind the mask of being Spider-Man as a sense of normalcy in order to protect his heart, as it would turn out that Janine was wearing a mask of her own all along. In issue #3, Janine reveals that her real name is Elizabeth Tyne and she’s been on the run since murdering her father, who raped and abused her throughout her whole childhood. In return, Ben shares the secrets of his past and who he is, and the two bond over their kinship of having lived tragic lives and believing that they’re undeserving of love, burdened with a “lost and broken soul.” Just when Ben thinks that being a genetic clone is going to repulse her, Janine proves she’s a ride-or-die lover and says: Hey… Spider-Man -- why are you standing there like a jerk? I love you, Ben Reilly -- whoever you are. 30 years later, Janine’s character couldn’t have taken a weirder detour after she turned herself in for the murder of her father. She and Ben became embroiled in conflict with the Beyond Corporation, resulting in Ben losing his memories and becoming Chasm. Janine then made her first appearance as Hallows’ Eve in Zeb Wells’ The Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #14, back when Peter rode a glider, wore a costume designed by Norman Osborn, and worked for Oscorp. Here, the Goblin Queen of Limbo, Madelyne Pryor, gave Janine a satchel of magical masks. Hallows’ Eve has since made several appearances, including Dark Web and Blood Hunt. Plus, if you’ve been reading Joe Kelly’s Amazing Spider-Man run, you’ll already know a little bit about Janine and her relationship with Ben as it is now. Hallows’ Eve’s origin story is abbreviated in the credits pages of writer Erica Schultz, artist Michael Dowling, color artist Brian Reber, and letterer Joe Caramagna’s five-issue Hallows’ Eve miniseries as such: JANINE GODBE has worn many masks in her life. Abused daughter, fugitive from the law, convicted murderer, federal prisoner… But none of those masks ever fit. Recently, while demons from Limbo attacked New York City, Janine was given a bag full of magical Halloween masks, each with powers and attributes that Janine could use when she wore them. These masks turned her into the haunting… HALLOWS’ EVE. Hallows’ Eve’s Magic Masks, Explained Hallows’ Eve wears an orange-and-black costume adorned with pumpkins, a hooded cape, white face paint with a black domino mask and glowing eyes, and a purple satchel. It wouldn’t be absurd if your first thought was that she could be one of the many different color-coded Goblins in Marvel Comics lore, as her look certainly isn’t too dissimilar from Hobgoblin’s, and she’s literally been called “Lady Hobgoblin” by students at an Empire State University Halloween party in the one-shot Hallows’ Eve: The Big Night #1. Hallows’ Eve’s bottomless satchel of magical masks includes, but is not limited to, the following: Captain America Fin Fang Foom Frankenstein’s monster Ghost Hulk Model Police officer Spider-Man Thanos Vampire Werewolf Witch Plus, plenty more have been featured that she herself hasn’t necessarily worn yet, such as an ant mask, a devil mask, a mummy mask, and a zombie mask. Theoretically, Hallows’ Eve could have a mask representing literally anything and anyone, and it doesn’t seem as if she always has control over which mask she produces. What’s ingenious about Hallows’ Eve’s design is that she doesn’t simply turn into an identical rendition of the character depicted in the mask she wears. Rather, it’s typically a Hallows’ Eve-style iteration that preserves her orange, black, and white palette to some degree, though she did swap orange and white for green when she wore the Hulk mask, and the police-officer mask gave her a convincing and discreet beat cop disguise. Hallows’ Eve Is Marvel’s Token Halloween Character The Amazing Spider-Man: Halloween Special #1, from writer Justina Ireland, penciler Mike Hawthorne, inker Wade von Grawbadger, colorist Erick Arciniega, and letterer Joe Caramagna, arrives this week, and recently unveiled preview pages provide a taste. Hallows’ Eve comes crashing through the window of an establishment with a sack of jewels. She inexplicably chooses to wear a Frankenstein’s monster mask, which seemingly does nothing for her but make it so she can only speak in roars and grunts, and Hallows’ Eve corrects Spider-Man with a “Rawr!” that’s translated for the reader in a narration bubble when he erroneously refers to it as a Frankenstein mask. Oddly, this is technically a retcon, and not a good one. Hallows’ Eve #3 already portrayed a Frankenstein mask that was literally called a “Frankenstein mask,” not a “Frankenstein’s-monster mask,” and so maybe The Amazing Spider-Man: Halloween Special #1 is hoping to rectify that. However, the mask previously gave Franken-Eve a much more classic and elaborate Frankenstein’s-monster look as well as enhanced strength, and she could still talk, even if her speech is growly and ineloquent. The solicitation for The Amazing Spider-Man: Halloween Special #1 reads as follows: HAPPY SPIDER-WEEN! Treat yourself with tricks in this epic Halloween adventure! The TRICK — Hallows’ Eve tries to pull off her biggest heist yet, and Spider-Man’s gotta stop her before she imperils the ENTIRE 616! The TREAT — a new costume for Spidey?! PLUS, WE HAVE SOME SPIDEY SECRETS HIDDEN AWAY IN THIS ISSUE, TOO! Hallows’ Eve also appeared in Marvel’s Spidey and The Avengers: Halloween Team-Up! last month. As a Halloween-themed character that Marvel could easily tuck away for 11 months of the year and revisit exclusively in every spooky season, Hallows’ Eve may sadly be no more than a gimmick character for the foreseeable future. She’s niche, to be sure, but her traumatizing and romantic origin story as “Janine Godbe,” and her unique powers as Hallows’ Eve, make her worthy of far greater stories.
