Marvel has unveiled Doctor Strange's replacement, as the iconic Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe loses his station to a dark new 'Sorcerer Superior.' Here's what you need to know. Debuting in 1963, Doctor Strange was introduced as the latest in a long line of benevolent sorcerers, with a lineage of Sorcerers Supreme going back to prehistory. Over the years, Strange has temporarily lost his title to others including wife Clea Strange, enemies Loki and Doctor Doom, and allies Doctor Voodoo and the Scarlet Witch, but he always finds a way to reclaim it. Now, Marvel has replaced Stephen Strange with the one person who will always prove to be his equal... himself. Meet Master Strange, The Sorcerer Superior In the recent Marvel Dimensions, Alex Ross, Jason Millet, Josh Johnson and Ariana Maher introduce the villainous 'Master Strange.' The story takes place in the In-Verse - a unique reality where Marvel's greatest heroes are villains, and Marvel's greatest villains are underground heroes fighting against the superhuman enforcers of the 'American Stronghold.' The issue introduces Master Strange as a dark sorcerer whose main duty is traveling the different planes of existence, crushing any challenger to his mystic supremacy. The character uses a version of Doctor Strange's 1969 masked redesign, but with a jagged chest symbol and glowing green third eye. Master Strange is one of the In-Verse's most powerful villains, enforcing the status quo through an alliance with the Avengers-esque 1st Strike and villains including the Daredevil-like Inquisitor and the mysterious Fantastic Four proxies the Unknowables. Up against these powerful forces, Master Strange has his own dedicated team of allies. Strange's Defenders Team Get The In-Verse Treatment Over the years, Doctor Strange has worked with a variety of teams, including the Midnight Sons and Avengers. However, in the In-Verse he appears to be far more dedicated to the Aggressors - the In-Verse's answer to the Defenders. In classic lore, the team is built around the quartet of Doctor Strange, Namor the Sub-Mariner, the Incredible Hulk and the Silver Surfer. In the In-Verse, the Aggressors are Master Strange, Bruce Banner's living superweapon the Reactor and the Atlantean Underlord. While a dark Silver Surfer - complete with a trippy black design and a gigantic fin - does appear, it's not clear whether he counts the Aggressors as allies. Alex Ross is famously a fan of Marvel and DC's classic comics, explaining why the Aggressors are Strange's key allies in this reality. While only getting a brief appearance in the comic, Master Strange acts as a dark mirror to Doctor Strange. Strange's quest to master the mystic arts for the heroic purpose of protecting humanity is corrupted into an ego-driven desire to dominate all rivals. Of course, like any dark reflection, Master Strange isn't Strange's total opposite - the original hero's pride has always been his Achilles heel. Will Doctor Strange Fight Master Strange in Marvel Lore? Marvel Dimensions is unusual in being published only as a graphic novel, with no monthly series beforehand. It's clearly a passion project for Ross, allowing his creativity to run wild as he reshapes the entire Marvel Universe. For these reasons, Marvel Dimensions is positioned as the kind of one-off story that often ends up feeling too siloed off for later creators to touch. Hopefully that's not the case, because the In-Verse is an exciting continuity with a lot to say about Marvel's biggest characters. Seeing Doctor Strange go up against Master Strange would clarify their differences and similarities in a way that could only improve both as characters. Given the comic confirms that the Avengers of Earth-616 and the In-Verse have already clashed once, there's hope for future crossover - a crossover which will hopefully include further exploration of this villainous take on Doctor Strange. Marvel Dimensions is available now from Marvel Comics.
