Marvel just revealed new details about Wolverine's healing factor, shedding further light on how it gives the mutant hero supplemental superpowers. In this case, enhanced agility and stamina. Wolverine has one of the strongest regenerative healing factors in Marvel canon. While his claws are his signature mutation, it is his healing powers that truly make Logan Marvel's most formidable fighter. "The best there is at what he does" and all that. And it is more than just a matter of being able to take all the punishment and eat all the pain that his foes can inflict. Over a century of experience has made Wolverine an expert in combat, but to survive all that in the first place, he needed to be aided by his mutation while fighting, way before recovering. That's what Marvel has reminded fans with the latest explanation of how vital Logan's healing abilities are to his functionality as a superhero. Warning! Spoilers ahead for Wolverine #25! Wolverine's Healing Factor Also Gives Him Super Stamina Wolverine #25, By Saladin Ahmed And Martín Cóccolo In the current arc of Wolverine, Logan has been robbed of his healing factor. That has effectively turned this arc into an extended love letter to Wolverine's healing as the true defining feature of his character. How can he survive without it? And more importantly, how can he be a hero? Those are the questions author Saladin Ahmed has been asking with this storyline. Wolverine's healing factor... is always working to optimize his bodily performance. In Wolverine #25, Logan pushes himself to the limit in a way he's used to, but without his healing factor to make it easier on him. "I run harder than I've ever run in my life," he narrates, explaining that, "it's agony" because he doesn't have his powers to "counteract exhaustion toxins." This reiterates to readers that Wolverine's healing factor is constantly active, even when he's not healing from grievous bodily injuries. It is always working to optimize his bodily performance, which includes giving him superhuman levels of stamina, agility, and likely also helping with muscle growth, explaining why Logan often exhibits superstrength as part of his power set. How Scientifically Accurate Are "Exhaustion Toxins," And What Does That Mean For Wolverine? Are "exhaustion toxins" a real thing? Wolverine #25 doesn't go full "hard science" with it; there are more technical and precise terms for them, but yes, there are chemical consequences of continuous and vigorous muscle use, including the buildup of lactic acid, which can contribute to slow down and fatigue. Wolverine's healing factor rapidly clears out lactic acid and other "toxins" and repairs muscle on-the-fly. There's an implication of this that Marvel hasn't fully explored in detail, but should, which is that when his healing factor is at full strength, the more Wolverine exerts himself in battle, the stronger he could potentially become. As for the question of Wolverine's heroism, whether it is defined by his healing factor or not, that is answered in this same sequence of panels from the climax of Wolverine #25. Wolverine pushes himself past his body's limit, even knowing his healing factor isn't going to compensate, and "it pays off." He gets where he needs to go, to be the hero, to confront the bad guy. In this way, Marvel has proven that Wolverine is, actually, separable from his healing factor, changing how fans look at the legendary hero permanently.
