Marvel Officially Confirms The Return Of The X-Men's Most Powerful Villain

Magneto remains the most complex of the lot, going from the team's greatest enemy to a complicated ally whose methods frequently put him at odds with Xavier. Apocalypse, of course, poses an entirely different level of threat to the X-Men, using his power and survival-of-the-fittest philosophy to reshape the mutant world, while Mister Sinister has spent decades manipulating things from behind the scenes. The Sentinels and their creator, Bolivar Trask, are a more grounded but equally terrifying danger, while villains like Sebastian Shaw, the Hellfire Club, William Stryker, and the Shadow King have also pushed the X-Men to their limits across comics, television, games, and film. However, arguably the most powerful X-Men villain of all time is one that dates back to the early 90s comic book era, and Marvel has just officially confirmed his return to the franchise in a brand-new update (via BOLS). Onslaught is officially making his way into Marvel: Crisis Protocol, bringing one of the X-Men's most powerful villains to Atomic Mass Games' tabletop battlefield. First appearing during Marvel's massive 1996 Onslaught storyline, the villain was created from the darkest aspects of Professor X and Magneto after Xavier psychically shut down Magneto's mind. The resulting psychic entity eventually took control of Xavier and became powerful enough to threaten not only the X-Men, but many of Marvel's biggest heroes. Marvel has brought Onslaught back numerous times over the years since then, cementing him as a truly formidable psychic threat in the expanded universe. Crisis Protocol's new Onslaught release is an enormous "8-Threat, Size 5" character who can teleport across huge portions of the battlefield, throw terrain, manipulate enemy positioning, and lead the new Onslaught's Grip affiliation, gaining power whenever one of his allies is dazed or knocked out. His accompanying Team Tactic Cards provide increased movement, control, and offensive options as well. The Onslaught Character Pack runs $49.99 and is currently available for preorder ahead of its September 25, 2026, release. It also includes Onslaught Crisis Cards that can be arranged into a dedicated campaign or mixed into regular games.
