The castle is called Strancally Castle, and is located in south-east Ireland. The property also has a 440 acre estate.As per a report from the Irish Times, Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan bought the castle in an off-market deal many weeks ago. Though the transaction has not yet appeared on Ireland’s Property Price Register.While the exact price has not been disclosed, it is reported that Strancally Castle could have fetched between €20 million (roughly Rs 223 crore) and €30 million (roughly Rs 335 crore).The castle is located about 200km from Meta’s international headquarters in Dublin. “Mark and his family are excited to continue caring for this historic home and look forward to spending time in Ireland, where Meta maintains its international headquarters,” a Zuckerberg spokesperson said. It was built around 1830 for John Keily, a former Tory MP.According to The Houses of Ireland by Brian de Breffny and Rosemary Ffolliott, it was designed by the Pain brothers on a lavish scale, with an area of 16,000 square feet. It is so big that it takes “a brisk walk of 4 and a half minutes to reach the dining room from the kitchen.” The castle was sold to Mark Zuckerberg by Michael Alen-Buckley, co-founder of private investment firm RAB Capital, and his wife, Giancarla, who bought the estate 25 years ago. “We leave our home of 25 years fondly and are grateful for the opportunity we have been given to save and restore Strancally Castle,” the couple said in a statement. “We are delighted that Mark and his family intend to build on our stewardship by continuing to invest in maintaining and enhancing the property and grounds as their home in a sustainable manner.”It is believed that Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan will continue to live in the United States and will use Strancally Castle when visiting Ireland. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, has had its European headquarters in Ireland since 2009 and employs about 1,500 people there.Zuckerberg’s interest in buying a home in Ireland had emerged last summer, when Liberty Media chairman John Malone said Zuckerberg had offered to buy his Castlemartin House and Estate in Kildare. For those unaware, Liberty Media owns the commercial rights for Formula 1.Zuckerberg is no stranger to big real estate purchases. Going by reports, the Meta chief already owns more than 11 properties in Palo Alto as well as homes in Florida, Washington DC, and Hawaii.Zuckerberg is not the only one in the tech world spending big on new houses.
