Mariners Promote Michael Arroyo

1:08pm: Seattle has announced Arroyo’s promotion. To clear space, the team optioned infielder Patrick Wisdom to Tacoma and moved right-hander Nick Davila from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL. Davila will miss the rest of the season with an SC joint sprain. 1:01pm: The Mariners are promoting outfield/second base prospect Michael Arroyo from Triple-A Tacoma, Daniel Kremer of MLB.com reports. Arroyo is not on the Mariners’ 40-man roster, which is full, so they will have to make room for the 21-year-old. This will be the third significant prospect promotion in the past couple of weeks for the Mariners, who brought up left-hander Kade Anderson on Aug. 20 and outfielder Lazaro Montes on Aug. 30. Like Anderson and Montes, Arroyo is widely considered a high-end prospect. Keith Law of The Athletic (No. 54), MLB Pipeline (No. 56) and FanGraphs (No. 70) agree that Arroyo is among the game’s 70 best farmhands, though Baseball America omitted him from its latest top 100. Arroyo signed with the Mariners in 2022 for $1.375MM – the largest bonus ever given to a prospect from Colombia. He spent his first three years with the organization in the infield, primarily the keystone. However, with second baseman Cole Young and shortstop Colt Emerson expected to serve as the Mariners’ double-play tandem for the long haul, they have given Arroyo quite a bit of time in left field this season. The 5-foot-10, 160-pounder combined for 66 starts there between the Double-A and Triple-A levels before Sunday’s promotion. The Mariners are giving the lefty-swinging Young the day off against Athletics southpaw Gage Jump. The righty-hitting Arroyo will man second in his place. With the floundering Mariners desperate for offense, they can move the versatile Arroyo around to get his bat in the lineup. In his first taste of Triple-A action this year, he slashed .277/.353/.490 (109 wRC+) with eight home runs and an impressive 16.2% strikeout rate in 235 plate appearances.
