Manipuri music teacher was previously threatened by attackers, son claims in FIR

A 54-year-old Manipuri musician died after an alleged assault outside his Delhi home, and his son told police he witnessed the attack. The case has triggered a police probe, student body outrage and political criticism over law and order.Chongtham Vikram Singh was a well-known name in Manipur’s Western music scene.Yaiphaba, son of 54-year-old Manipuri musician, C Vikram Singh, who died after a group of men allegedly assaulted him outside his apartment in Delhi on Monday has filed the FIR in the case and told police that some of the attackers had previously threatened his father after he stopped them from drinking alcohol.In his statement to police, Yaiphaba said he lives with his family and originally belongs to Manipur. He said he is pursuing a BA.LLB at Asian Law College, Noida. He identified his father as C Vikram Singh, 54, and said Singh had not worked for around seven to eight years and often stayed at home.According to Yaiphaba's statement, at around 11.30 pm on September 6, he was at home when he heard his father shouting outside. He opened the door and saw four to five boys beating his father with kicks and punches. Yaiphaba said he raised an alarm, following which all the boys fled.Yaiphaba told police that he saw the faces of the attackers while they were fleeing and could identify them if they appeared before him. He then took his father to Holy Family Hospital in a taxi along with his mother, Jochlia, and a neighbour, Rado. During the journey, Singh told his son that the boys who had assaulted him had come from the dhaba located opposite their home. Singh also told him that some of the boys had previously threatened him after he stopped them from drinking alcohol.Singh later lost consciousness inside the taxi. He was admitted to Holy Family Hospital but died during treatment. Yaiphaba told police that his father's death occurred because of the assault by the boys and sought appropriate legal action against all of them. Police recorded that a doctor declared Singh "Unfit For Statement" while he was unconscious, and therefore his statement could not be obtained.Police said the Sunlight Colony police station received a PCR call about the beating of Singh, a Manipur native who had been residing in Kilokari village for several years.A preliminary enquiry found that Singh, who belonged to the Meitei community, had objected to six men allegedly creating a nuisance outside his house. Police said he sustained injuries after the youths allegedly rained blows and punches on him.Police said Singh's son Yaiphaba rushed him to Holy Family Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Police initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault and Singh's death.Police said they had detained some suspects, including a minor, and identified the accused. They were working to arrest the remaining accused, police said.Police said the investigation remains underway.Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday criticised the Modi government over the beating to death of the musician from Manipur in Delhi.
