Mangaluru Railway Region transition: Mysuru and Palakkad Divisions to meet this week

MANJUNATH Heads of South Western Railway’s Mysuru Division and Southern Railway’s Palakkad Division along with divisional-level officers will meet in Mangaluru this week to hold discussions and finalise modalities about the transition of Mangaluru Railway Region from Palakkad to Mysuru Division.A senior railway official told The Hindu that the meeting was likely to be held from Thursday in the City to be attended by Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) of both the Divisions.The meeting follows the August 21 decision of the Railway Ministry to integrate Mangaluru Railway Region with Mysuru Division for administrative reasons and to ensure seamless operations of coaching and freight trains with effect from October 1. As per the order, SWR’s jurisdiction extends till Ullal Railway Station (including) towards South, from the present Padil and till Thokur (excluding) in the North (towards Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd.). Of the about 39 km route in Mangaluru Railway region, Mysuru Division would get about 30 km till Ullal.Status quoOn taking over the administration of Mangaluru Railway region, the Mysuru Division was likely to maintain status quo on everything, including operations and staff. “Our primary concern will be smooth transition of the region from Palakkad to Mysuru,” the official said.Transfer or absorption of the personnel would be governed by the set rules of the Railway Ministry and there was no need for the staff to get worried, the official said. There would not be any immediate transfer or relocation of the staff from Mangaluru. MANJUNATH Mangaluru region has been the major operational hub, coaching as well as freight, for Palakkad Division. While Mangaluru Central Railway station handles about 30 arrivals and departures, Mangaluru Junction Railway station, the major link between the North and Kerala, handles about 70 halting trains and about 10 originating or terminating trains. Central has six platforms, including one Bay (half) platform and Junction has three platforms. Platform Train Examination (PFTR) was done for about 20 trains with an average of 240 coaches every day. Central has a running room for the crew with 63 beds with exclusive beds for lady staff.Mangaluru Junction has a primary freight and wagon examination depot for the region and also houses a fuelling station (diesel).
