Police were deployed at the spot, and the protest led to a sharp exchange between Moitra and local rebel TMC MLA Jaber Sheikh.The demonstration came after Moitra attended a meeting with Trinamool Congress workers in Chapra as part of an organisational exercise. While Moitra described the meeting as "very successful" and blamed the protest on Sheikh and BJP supporters, Sheikh said it reflected anger over the MP's "non-performance".The incident took place in Chapra in Nadia district after Moitra's meeting with party workers of the Chapra block. Sheikh has joined the rebel camp led by Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee.Later, Moitra said discussions were held at the meeting, in the presence of the MLAs of Palashipara and Jalangi, on strengthening the party organisation and restructuring it at the grassroots level. She alleged that the demonstration was backed by Sheikh and BJP supporters and accused those who had switched political allegiance after winning elections on the TMC symbol of being "traitors." Moitra also said action would be taken against district panchayat members if they were found to have engaged in activities against the party's interests.Sheikh, however, said the protest was against the "non-performance" of the two-time MP. BJP leader Gopal Das and local resident Ambarjit Roy alleged that extortion and political unrest had increased in the area and claimed that Moitra had a role in the prevailing situation. They also said the protest was "spontaneous" and was meant to register opposition to what they described as alleged derogatory remarks or acts concerning Hindu deities. The allegations could not be independently verified.The protesters also rejected Moitra's claim that the demonstration was backed by defectors and the BJP, and accused her of being responsible for a number of problems in the area.
