A LUXURY £6.8 million superyacht has sunk in the Mediterranean just four days after being delivered to its new owner. Dramatic footage shows the lavish 98ft vessel slowly disappearing beneath the waves before rolling onto its side, leaving just a sliver of the yacht poking above the surface. Initial reports suggest a terrifying engine failure sparked a fire in the seals before water began pouring into the yacht. The blaze was quickly extinguished, but the suspected failure may have caused the vessel to lose buoyancy as water flooded in. However, the exact chain of events behind the dramatic sinking has yet to be officially established. Fourteen guests and crew were aboard when disaster struck. Twelve were rescued by a nearby vessel, while the owner and a friend remained aboard the stricken yacht awaiting help. After the rescue, the stricken yacht was secured on the seabed to stop it sinking any further. Containment booms have also been deployed around the wreck as authorities race to prevent an environmental disaster. Initial checks found no fuel leaking into the sea. A huge recovery operation is now being planned, with a pontoon weighing around 200 tonnes reportedly set to haul the wreck from the seabed. The La Maddalena Port Authority is also preparing measures to force the area to be restored and prevent further environmental damage. The shock sinking is now under investigation by the Coast Guard, which will attempt to piece together exactly what happened aboard the newly delivered superyacht. Investigators are yet to establish whether the engine failure triggered the fire, whether the blaze caused the water ingress, or precisely how the yacht ultimately lost buoyancy. Comment now
