2 min readKayce Dutton sold his father’s ranch at the end of Yellowstone, the hit Western series by Taylor Sheridan starring Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, and Cole Hauser. It might’ve been the ending that everyone planned for even if the series hadn’t ended early due to various off-screen feuds between Costner, Sheridan, and the cast, but Grimes says that he and his former TV father still have yet to speak to one another since he left the show.“Not for any other reason than, you know, we're both busy guys and life moves on," the actor told USA Today. Though it seems neither party has reached out either.Of course, as fans of the series, we all hope that the father-son relationship onscreen matches the actors’ lives off camera as well. Yes, Yellowstone was a job and they were just coworkers, technically. But it’s a shame the way things ended for everyone. Plus, it doesn’t help that Grimes’s character has continued to bash his TV father’s legacy on Marshals, the Yellowstone spin-off on CBS that features Kayce Dutton as he attempts to raise his son away from a life of violence. When we spoke to Grimes ahead of the Yellowstone series finale in 2024, he said that he hoped the audience could “see that it was time” for the show to end.“To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone that meant some of the conflict was gone,” he continued. “Obviously, it didn’t make it super fun to be around. Not pointing any fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we’ve filmed.”ParamountLuke Grimes says that he and Kevin Costner still haven’t spoken since Yellowstone ended.Still, there’s nothing stopping John Dutton from appearing via flashback in Marshals should Costner come around to the idea, right?“I think it would be cool,” Grimes told USA Today. “I doubt that will happen at this point.”After all, Kayce hasn’t even seen his sister—Beth Dutton (Reilly) and her husband Rip (Hauser), who star on the other Yellowstone sequel spin-off, Dutton Ranch—since Yellowstone ended. “If there was a flashback, I'd probably rather it be with Monica than John," he continued, mentioning how Marshals killed off his former TV wife, played by Kelsey Asbille. "That'd be more poignant to the character.”
