Live-Action Video Game Adaptation Potential For Final Fantasy 7 Addressed By Franchise Executive

Square Enix's Final Fantasy video game franchise got its start back in 1987 and now consists of 16 main entries, in addition to numerous remakes. The next remake slated to release is Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the last in a trilogy of games remaking the acclaimed and beloved 1997 original. In a recent interview with Deadline, Revelation game director Naoki Hamaguchi addresses the possibility of Final Fantasy VII being adapted into a TV show. While it doesn't sound like anything concrete is in the works currently, Hamaguchi makes clear that it's on the table, along with adaptations of other Square Enix game franchises, including Kingdom Hearts and other Final Fantasy titles. Check out his comment below: But in terms of adaptations, even a live-action adaptation or an animated adaptation, we’re always thinking that these properties, things like, again, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy VII … not just Final Fantasy VII, even just Remake. Across all of the Final Fantasy properties and IPs, we’re always looking for the best way to bring them to the audience and for opportunities like this with them. So yeah, it’s definitely a possibility. We want to be very proactive in looking into opportunities like that. Out of the 16 main entries, Final Fantasy VII is generally considered one of the best. The story follows a former mercenary called Cloud Strife who teams up with a group of rebels to stop an evil corporation from using the planet's life force as a source of energy. The game was not just critically acclaimed, but a major commercial hit. Final Fantasy VII sold more than 15 million copies worldwide and was celebrated for its graphics and the ways in which it pushed the boundaries of video game cinematic storytelling. Final Fantasy VII Revelation follows the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in 2024. The trilogy-ending remake is slated to release on April 8, 2027, for PlaStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Windows. If a Final Fantasy VII TV adaptation were to move forward, it's not clear what platform it would end up on. Square Enix could potentially partner with a major streaming service like Netflix or Prime Video to bring a live-action version of the story to life. The scope and scale of the story would likely demand a fairly significant budget, however, which could be a key roadblock to overcome with any adaptation. Notable recent efforts in the world of TV include HBO's The Last of Us, Paramount's Halo, Netflix's Resident Evil, Prime Video's Fallout, and Peacock's Twisted Metal. Though not all of these shows have been successful, the audience for such projects when they're done right can be substantial. It remains to be seen whether Final Fantasy VII will ever get the live-action adaptation treatment, but Hamaguchi's latest comment certainly suggests it's a possibility. For now, however, those interested in the franchise can look forward to the release of Revelation next spring.
