In the first round of benchmarking the in-development Linux 7.4 kernel there are some performance improvements -- and some small regressions -- worth noting over the current Linux 7.3 stable kernel. This first round of Linux 7.4 kernel benchmarking was on a System76 Thelio Major workstation with AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X. When the Linux 7.4 merge window began winding down I started my Linux 7.4 kernel testing and performance benchmarking. The first system I tried out Linux 7.4 Git on as of this past weekend was the System76 Thelio Major workstation paired with the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X, 4 x 32GB DDR5-5600 memory, 1TB Crucial NVMe SSD, and the Radeon AI PRO R9700 graphics. Linux 7.3 stable was compared to Linux 7.4 Git as of 1 November. The same compiler and kernel configuration defaults were used when building both v7.3 and Linux Git. In addition to the raw performance, the CPU power consumption was also monitored during the testing process. In case you missed it from yesterday, see the Linux 7.4 feature overview for a look at all the interesting changes to be found in this next kernel version.
