Sign in to your ScreenRant account After 27 seasons, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is running out of time to realize one of its oldest storylines. For nearly three decades, SVU has put Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson through the wringer, from personal and professional triumphs to losses and setbacks that are equally devastating, if not more so. Through it all, Benson has remained one of TV’s most fearless, badass female characters. However, one thing fans know her best for is her partnership with Elliot Stabler. Their chemistry was so intense that viewers spent years begging NBC to find a way to bring Christopher Meloni back to the franchise after his departure. Finally, in 2021, Stabler returned with his own spin-off, Law & Order: Organized Crime. Now, with Special Victims Unit approaching its historic 600th episode, the series has the perfect opportunity to finally bring Benson and Stabler together before it runs out of chances to give its longest-running relationship the payoff it deserves. NBC Is Preparing For SVU's Rare 600th Episode Milestone Image via NBC Before Benson and Stabler can finally take that next step, SVU has another major milestone to celebrate. The series will officially reach its 600th episode during season 28, further cementing its place in television history. By the end of season 27, SVU had already aired 594 episodes, meaning fans won't have to wait long for the milestone after the show returns. Unsurprisingly, NBC and the creative team appear to understand just how monumental SVU's 600th episode really is. Showrunner Michele Fazekas has teased that the episode is being planned in a "big way" (via Give Me My Remote). She also acknowledged that it could potentially be the show's final centennial episode, making the occasion even more significant. SVU has never been one to overlook these milestones, either. Special Victims Unit's 200th episode featured Robin Williams in one of the procedural's most memorable guest appearances, while the 500th episode put Benson's past front and center. These episodes tend to be opportunities for SVU to look back while still pushing its characters forward. That means SVU's 600th episode can be about more than celebrating how long the show has stayed on the air. If the series is going to use the hour to honor the people and relationships responsible for its longevity, there are few more important than Benson and Stabler. Better yet, finally moving their relationship forward would ensure episode 600 leaves a lasting impact beyond simply adding another number to SVU's record-breaking run. SVU's Milestone Episode Is The Perfect Time For Benson & Stabler's Romance Payoff Virginia Sherwood / ©Peacock / Courtesy Everett Collection Benson and Stabler's relationship has been one of SVU's defining elements since the beginning. For 12 seasons, the pair worked side by side, developing the kind of trust and emotional connection that went far beyond other procedural partnerships. Even before the series openly acknowledged romantic feelings, it was easy to understand why viewers saw something more between them. That connection became even more complicated when Stabler abruptly left SVU at the end of season 12. Benson was forced to move forward without the partner who had been such an important part of her life. For nearly a decade, it seemed unlikely viewers would ever get the chance to see them together again. Stabler's eventual return to the Law & Order universe in 2021 changed everything. His comeback reopened old wounds for Benson, but it also gave SVU an opportunity it never had during their original partnership. They were no longer partners bound together by the job, meaning the series could finally explore what their connection looked like outside the police station and Stabler’s marriage to Kathy. Since then, SVU and Organized Crime have repeatedly pushed Benson and Stabler closer to acknowledging their feelings. Stabler has told Benson that he loves her, the two have nearly kissed, and their conversations have increasingly acknowledged how important they are to one another. At this point, the romantic implications are hardly subtle. Law & Order Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Premiere Date September 13, 1990 September 20, 1999 Seasons 25 (renewed for season 26) 27 (renewed for season 28) Episodes 544 594 That is exactly why SVU's 600th episode feels like the perfect time to cement their romance. Benson and Stabler do not suddenly need to get married or make some massive declaration. Even a kiss or an honest conversation about finally giving their relationship a chance would provide meaningful progress after years of build-up. More importantly, giving Benson and Stabler that moment during episode 600 would connect the milestone directly to SVU's earliest years. Stabler was there when Benson's story began, and their partnership played an enormous role in shaping both her character and the series that fans have watched for nearly three decades. SVU's 600th episode should celebrate where the series has been while also giving viewers something that pushes its characters forward. Allowing Benson and Stabler to stop dancing around their feelings would accomplish both and give one of the show's longest-running storylines the kind of milestone moment it has earned. Why SVU Needs To Pay Off Benson & Stabler's Story Sooner Rather Than Later NBC As exciting as the idea of Benson and Stabler finally getting together during episode 600 is, SVU cannot afford to keep pushing their relationship into some undefined future. After 27 seasons, there is no guarantee the series will have another milestone large enough to justify waiting for the “perfect” moment. That reality has already crept into Benson's story. Season 27 saw her seriously question how much longer she could continue doing the job, even if the finale ultimately recommitted her to SVU. The show may not be ending tomorrow, but it has clearly become more willing to acknowledge that Benson cannot do this forever. Stabler's future within the franchise is even less certain. Law & Order: Organized Crime was canceled after five seasons, leaving Meloni without a regular Law & Order series of his own. Stabler can still return to SVU, but those appearances now depend on finding reasons and opportunities to bring him back. That makes every new delay feel increasingly unnecessary. SVU has already moved Benson and Stabler far beyond the point where their romantic feelings can be dismissed as fan interpretation. They have shared declarations of love, near-kisses, jealousy, and countless emotionally intimate moments. There is little ambiguity left for the series to preserve. Instead, continuing to tease a relationship without allowing it to actually happen risks turning one of SVU's greatest slow burns into narrative stalling. Benson and Stabler have spent decades evolving as individuals, but their relationship remains caught in the same cycle of almost taking the next step, only to have something inevitably get in the way. More importantly, SVU should not save their romantic payoff exclusively for its inevitable series finale. After asking viewers to invest in Benson and Stabler for this long, a last-minute kiss before the credits roll would hardly be satisfying. Letting them get together sooner would allow the show to explore what being a couple actually means for them. SVU's 600th episode may not be the show's final opportunity to make Benson and Stabler happen, but it could be its best. After 27 years, the series has earned the chance to give its most enduring relationship a new beginning. If Law & Order: Special Victims Unit keeps waiting for another milestone, it may eventually discover that it waited too long.
