Laoag PWDs, advocates unite for fun run to champion disability rights

(Photo by Leilanie Adriano) LAOGA CITY — Hundreds of persons with disabilities (PWDs), their families, advocates and government agencies gathered here on Sunday for a fun run and walk to promote inclusivity and physical fitness in celebration of National Disability Rights Week. Richard Ramos Jr., president of the Laoag City Federation of PWDs, said the Lakad/Takbo sa Komunidad Tungo sa Pagkakaisa highlights the importance of creating inclusive communities where PWDs can actively participate in sports, education, employment, and other aspects of public life without discrimination. “We are here to show that there is unity and inclusivity among us,” he said, citing that proceeds raised from the registration fees of around 600 participants will fund activities to promote the rights and welfare of PWDs. Kristoffer Raymund Medina, officer-in-charge of the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO), said that through events like these, PWDs feel empowered because they are seen and supported by the government. The city government’s PDAO continues to offer various programs and services for PWDs. Among these are the provision of assistive devices such as wheelchairs and walking aids; hygiene kits and food packs, as well as free cinema access and a social pension for eligible beneficiaries. Organizers, in partnership with PDAO, said this is the second time they have hosted the event with the support of public and private sponsors. Article continues after this advertisement Mary Ann Jacinto, a mother of 14-year-old wheelchair user Angelyn from Barangay Cavit, expressed her joy over her daughter’s participation in the event. “I am glad that we have an opportunity like this to celebrate diversity, foster social inclusion, and advocate for the continued promotion of disability rights,” she said. Article continues after this advertisement Jacinto hopes more activities such as the fun walk and run will inspire greater understanding, acceptance, and respect for PWDs. On June 19, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. declared July 17-23 as National Disability Rights Week through Proclamation 597, affirming the country’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability. /apl Your subscription could not be saved.
