Sign in to your Collider account Netflix's most-watched original title is officially entering an exciting new era, with its sequel set for a major upgrade three years before release. KPop Demon Hunters, after breaking multiple viewership records last year, earned a sequel not long after premiering, which is currently targeted for a 2029 release. The film, featuring returning co-writers and directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, will be on a much larger scale and more eventful than its predecessor, with new musical elements set to be introduced. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who make up the K-pop girl group Huntrix. When they aren't selling out stadiums, the trio uses their secret identities as badass demon hunters to protect their fans from an ever-present supernatural threat. Together, they must face their biggest enemy yet, the Saja Boys, an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise. With 2029 still far off, fans have plenty of time to anticipate the sequel, which, unlike the original, will get a much bigger release strategy. Netflix is planning a "big, broad, global" theatrical release for KPop Demon Hunters 2, as confirmed by the streamer's co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, at Bloomberg's Screentime, per Deadline. While discussing Netflix's evolving theatrical release strategy, Sarandos said: “We’re going to do a big wide release for Narnia next year, and then we’ll do a big wide release for Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory at the end of the year. We think they’ll do great, and when the KPop Demon Hunters sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release.” Collider Exclusive · 8 Questions · 2 Minutes Which Music Festival Were You Born to Headline? REVEAL MY FESTIVAL → Top Of The Bill You Were Born To Headline…Four festivals, four completely different ideas of what a great set even is. Here is the one built for you, what that stage would demand, and what it would give back if you pulled it off. GlastonburyYou belong on the Pyramid Stage, which is the only festival slot in the world that can rewrite a career in ninety minutes. Glastonbury does not care what you are wearing and it will not help you if the weather turns, and that is exactly the appeal. You want the moment you earned rather than the moment you engineered, and this is the one stage that can tell the difference. The festival took a fallow year in 2026 to let the land recover, so the next one carries two years of anticipation instead of one. Nothing here is polished, and the sets people still talk about are usually the ones where something went slightly wrong. You would take the mud, the walk and the five in the morning finish, because the alternative is a show nobody remembers. CoachellaYou belong in the desert, where the set is only half the job and the other half is the spectacle around it. Coachella rewards people who understand that a show is something you design rather than something you just play. You think in images, and you have never seen the point of doing something memorable and letting it go undocumented. This is the festival where headline slots get built like film productions, with sets, guests and reveals planned for months. Beyonce's 2018 headline set remains the benchmark, and it turned a festival booking into a concert film and a cultural event. The pressure is the flip side, since a stage watched by that many phones is unforgiving about anything that does not land. TomorrowlandYou belong on the most absurdly ambitious main stage ever built, in front of a field of people from a hundred countries who all want the same thing at the same time. There is no irony here at all, which is precisely why it works. You are at your best when a room is already moving, and your instinct is to read the crowd rather than the setlist. The main stage burned down days before the 2025 festival and they opened on schedule anyway, which tells you everything about the place. Nobody builds like this. The stage design budget alone would fund most other festivals entirely. What you would want from it is not admiration but participation, and this is the one crowd that gives that without being asked. Newport FolkYou belong at the smallest festival on this list and the one with the longest memory. Newport is where the songs matter more than the staging, and where an audience will genuinely stand in silence to hear a verse properly. You would rather be believed than watched, and you have very little interest in anything that gets in the way of the words. This is where Dylan went electric in 1965, still the most argued about forty minutes in American music. A Complete Unknown put that exact night back in front of a mainstream audience and reminded everybody how much was at stake. The tradition here is that the best moment is unannounced, which suits somebody who would rather surprise a room than sell it something. ↻ RETAKE THE QUIZ 'KPop Demon Hunters' Is Netflix's Most-Watched Original Fantasy Film For the aforementioned Netflix titles, including KPop Demon Hunters, the streamer will report box office numbers for the first time, a strategy Sarandos further explained. He also elaborated on what constitutes success for such titles, noting that it won't be directly linked to the profit-and-loss statement. According to the CEO, "If you're gonna say, pick a little risk to the Netflix performance, it should have the potential for a very big upside in the theater." Hence, the reason titles like Narnia and KPop Demon Hunters are getting major global releases even as other films with moderate prospects may face greater challenges. KPop Demon Hunters 2's major theatrical release marks a massive strategy shift for Netflix, as the original movie debuted directly on the streaming platform on June 20, 2025. Upon release, it immediately surged to #1 globally and has since broken Netflix streaming records, amassing 325.1M views in its first 90 daysand spending 63 consecutive weeks in the Global Top 10. Additionally, it received rave reviews from critics and holds a Certified Fresh 92% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes as of this publication. KPop Demon Hunters streams on Netflix.
