Kosovo’s new parliament reconvenes for its inaugural session on Wednesday, despite continued uncertainty over whether lawmakers will agree on the election of a head-of-state. The session started on August 6, following elections in June, but was paused after the victorious Vetevendosje party asked for “more time” for negotiations with other parties on the candidate for Kosovo’s next president. At the end of the month, Vetevendosje leader Albin Kurti and his counterpart from the opposition Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK, Lumir Abdixhiku announced that their parties would both back Judge Bekim Sejdiu as president, only for a third of the LDK’s MPs to cry foul. Such is the depth of animosity between Vetevendosje and its rivals, constituting parliament and electing a president has become a major challenge, complicated by a rift within the LDK over Abdixhiku’s leadership.
