Keralam power crisis: State eyeing additional 150 MW from NPCIL, says CM

Keralam expects to get an additional 150 megawatts (MW) from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) as part of its attempts to fill the gap in peak demand, which has led to power curbs in the evening hours, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said on Wednesday.“We hope to get another 150 MW from NPCIL. They had already supplied 150 MW at ₹4.65 per unit,” the Chief Minister said after the weekly Cabinet meeting, adding that this should allow Keralam to take “control” of the power situation.Keralam has so far managed to procure 650 MW from various sources to meet the peak demand. This quantum includes 150 MW from Odisha, 150 MW from NPCIL and 200 MW from other sources. The State had also added another 150 MW by completing the maintenance on a generator on a war-footing, he said.The Chief Minister also reiterated his government’s plans to draft short and long term plans for ensuring uninterrupted power supply in the State. The government will formulate a plan for meeting the demand from October 2026 to the 2027 monsoon months, he said. A meeting was planned on Thursday to discuss the matter, he added.Mr. Satheesan listed the absence of a long-term power supply agreement, an increase of 950 MW in September 2026 demand compared to the same month in 2025 and the shortage of electricity in the market.
