Jonathan Groff to Return to Broadway in Solo Play ‘The Amish Project’

Jonathan Groff is returning to Broadway this season in the solo play The Amish Project. The play, written by Jessica Dickey, is a fictional exploration of a schoolhouse shooting in an Amish community, and how the community learns to provide forgiveness and compassion. Sarna Lapine will direct the show, which is slated to begin performances Feb. 10, 2027, at the Broadhurst Theatre. The play debuted at the New York International Fringe Festival and was developed at the Cherry Lane Theatre before premiering Off-Broadway at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in 2009. It has since had productions at regional theaters across the U.S. and around the world. The play is typically performed as a one-woman show, with the main actor playing multiple characters. Groff will perform the play as written. This marks the third Broadway project for Groff in recent years, following his Tony-nominated run in Just In Time from March 2025 to 2026 and his Tony-winning role in Merrily We Roll Along in the 2023-2024 season. He comes to the project after making his Royal Shakespeare Company debut in As You Like It this past fall. He recently completed production on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s feature adaptation of Octet, as well as the independent film Trust the Man, which he stars in opposite Daniel Radcliffe. The subject matter of the play struck a chord with Groff, who grew up nearby in Amish country. “20 years ago this month, an unimaginable tragedy happened in a one room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Jessica Dickey wrote an astounding work of art in response. Sarna Lapine sent me The Amish Project last year and I was floored by the urgency and potent poetry of Jessica’s writing as she dives headfirst into the many aftershocks of this horrific event and explores the idea that sometimes the most radical human act is forgiveness. I am profoundly grateful to be bringing Jessica’s play to Broadway alongside Sarna and this incredible team,” Groff said. Robert Ahrens and Tom Kirdahy, producers of Just In Time, are producing the play. THR Newsletters Sign up for THR news straight to your inbox every day Subscribe Sign Up
