John Carpenter, the master of horror, has created several phenomenal cult classic films that fans continue to delight in (perhaps with their hands ever so slightly covering their eyes) to this very day. From The Thing to Halloween and everything in between, Carpenter's numerous classics have become staples in the world of cinema, worthy of academic study, of enjoying relaxed in a recliner with a cold beverage and a bowl of popcorn, or in their updated and transformed forms as video games, board games, and multimedia experiences. However you consume your Carpenter flicks, there's no denying that they rank among some of the very best, especially in the world of horror. Fortunately, one John Carpenter's greatest works is making a splashy return. Fans of this particular experience are undoubtedly going to get a kick out of this latest project, if they haven't already, and newcomers will be introduced to the fascinating and slightly terrifying mind of one of cinema's greatest directors. John Carpenter's Toxic Commando was released back in March 2026 to positive reviews, offering fans a thrilling first-person horde shooter that aimed to replace the likes of Left 4 Dead, or at least deliver a compelling alternative to it. It did everything it needed to, its main flaw being that it released during a wave of similarly designed first-person shooters, and thus struggled to find as big an audience as it may have done a few years prior. Of course, Toxic Commando isn't Carpenter's first foray into video games, but it does prove to be his most accessible game yet. That works in its favor, however, as it makes it a prime target for a relatively easy comeback, something that may very well be possible now that it is launching on Xbox Game Pass. Joining the pantheon of great co-op games on Game Pass, Toxic Commando looks set to see a flurry of new players experience its chaotic horde-based gameplay. It was inevitable that it would eventually grace the platform, if only due to its multiplayer focus facilitating a constant cycle of new players, something that Game Pass is more than capable of delivering. John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is coming to Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass on November 12. It will likely stay on the platform for a year or so, giving players plenty of time to dive headfirst into its visceral first-person shooting with a few friends. If you are interested, John Carpenter's Toxic Commando sees up to four players head into large open levels with assorted goals and objectives to complete, not unlike the aforementioned Left 4 Dead 2. However, there are huge Space Marine 2-esque hordes of zombies and mutants that will quickly overwhelm you if you're not careful. John Carpenter's Toxic Commando can be played solo with AI-controlled teammates that do a decent job of assisting the player Toxic Commando marked John Carpenter's move away from Hollywood, as it is an original video game not based on any of his previous work. It was still written and scored by the director, however, and thus features all of his trademark quirks that made his films so special. It ultimately proves to be a cinematic yet deeply video gamey experience that is well worth playing if you're a fan of his work. If you've been looking for a new co-operative shooter and overlooked John Carpenter's Toxic Commando when it first came out, then now is the time to play it.
