A new panel has been formed in its place. The order came a day after the event was held inside the campus. Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya issued a notice on October 7, 2026, and replaced the old committee with eight new members. The event had brought together students from various universities, colleges, student bodies, and Left student wings. The V-C’s order stated that the ‘Approving and Monitoring for Programmes’ committee would stand dissolved and that acting Registrar Debjit Dutta would oversee matters for the time being. However, no reason was mentioned for the said decision. ‘Procedural lapses’University insiders said the decision was taken citing “procedural lapses”. However, student organisers said they had all due permission for the student convention. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad had previously raised objections about “outsiders” attending the student convention. “Several events have been organised on campus where outsiders have attended. The ABVP never had a problem with those. If there are new rules in place to not allow outsiders, then there needs to be a discussion and all stakeholders need to be informed beforehand so that events can be organised accordingly,” AISA State president and former student of JU, Ritam Majhi, told The Hindu on Thursday. The JU teacher who was heading the previous committee has been served a notice seeking explanation for the “procedural lapse”, where the permission letter was not supposedly forwarded to the acting Registrar for a sign off. “The letter seeking permission for the event was sent to the administrative office, if that was not forwarded to the Registrar, then what can the committee do? The money was also charged for the hall that was offered for the event. How did the university not know about the event?” Jadavpur University Teachers Association president Partha Pratim Ray said. Professors said they head these committees in the institute as a voluntary service to the university and that it was not part of their job roles. “If they send us notices for such things, it will be hard to cooperate,” a professor said. The notice issued to the committee has since been revoked after verbal discussion between the parties concerned. Prof. Bhattacharya was unreachable for comments, even after multiple attempts.
