Prison Break's genius was in its simplicity and character writing, but 26 years later, it is now the end of an era for the iconic show. Prison Break blended The Great Escape and Money Heist, telling a story that was so tightly-written that it was impossible to stop watching, with every episode ending with a monstrous cliffhanger. Still, despite a groundbreaking first season and a worthy second season, the show began to lose its way. Prison Break's five seasons and movie prove that the formula still has potential, but the upcoming reboot is going to be very different. While the exact plot and tone of the reboot have been kept under wraps, a teaser for Hulu's Prison Break reboot has given viewers a little more insight through a very short clip. The original show revolved around a main character's tattoo that hid the blueprints for the prison in question, allowing him to break his innocent brother out. The teaser shows a tattoo, but what role this will have to play is currently unknown. The story will reportedly follow a former soldier working as a corrections officer in a deadly prison that contains someone she loves. It can be inferred that the show will involve an escape plan of some kind, as there can be no Prison Break without a prison break, but it is virtually impossible to imagine the show without its best characters. However, Prison Break: Black Creek looks set to continue without any of the original characters as a link to the previous season, ending this era of the show for good. Prison Break Is Moving On Without Its Best Characters It might have been exciting to see actors like Robert Knepper and William Fichtner reprising their roles in the series, and it is possible in theory, with Prison Break's reboot being set in the same universe as the original show. However, none of the original actors have been confirmed for the reboot, with Wentworth Miller (Michael Scofield) saying on Instagram, "I’m out. Of PB. Officially." Following a different prison and new characters makes it virtually certain that this will be a clean break from 2005's show, and Hulu's reboot is reportedly taking a darker tone. The first season of Prison Break was filmed inside the real, abandoned Joliet Correctional Center in Illinois. The Prison Break reboot needs to recapture the magic of season 1, but this could be a struggle as one of the best things about the series was the character development. Prison Break followed some typical prison movie tropes, with sadistic guards, creepy villains and an equivalent character to The Shawshank Redemption’s Brooks. However, the show's excellent twists kept changing the game, allowing the characters to transcend stereotypes, while the actors cast in the roles were mesmerizing even in some of the show's more far-fetched scenes. Many of Prison Break: Black Creek's new cast members have already been announced, and the show will star Emily Browning (American Gods) in the main role, joined by Sam Trammell (True Blood,) Sean Bridgers (Deadwood,) and Robin Weigert (Sons of Anarchy.) That said, one detail that has barely been covered is the break itself, which needs to be smart and unexpected. Living up to the original may be a challenge, but the reboot's apparent weakness is actually its greatest strength. A Total Cast Change Is The Best Decision Prison Break Could Have Made There's no denying that the original cast made the show a success, but a harsh reality of rewatching Prison Break is the fact that you can have too much of a good thing. Unwilling to let Michael Scofield go, the character was resurrected and brought back, resulting in Prison Break having three different endings and several drastic changes in genre. Season 4 gave the villainous T-Bag a fitting ending and wrapped the story up well, but seeing some of the main cast return yet again took the emotional impact out of previous endings, stopping the show from sticking the landing. The decision not to include fan favorite characters like Mahone and Sucre has been controversial, but bringing back the core cast yet again would be a mistake. Prison Break's formula is timeless and a well-executed prison escape storyline can result in a masterpiece like The Great Escape, so it is time that the series moved on from the previous characters and allowed new ones to become fan favorites. This will allow the show's writers to surprise us, just as the original Prison Break did, and partly due to the fact that the characters were new to us at the time.
