Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes has just gone through the end of an era, but the director is still very much involved with the detective going forward, able to start a new era soon. Ritchie's list of movies includes quite a few action films and crime entries. In 2026, he has had success on streaming with TV shows like The Gentlemen on Netflix and MobLand on Paramount+, both crime thriller series, as well as movies like Henry Cavill's spy thriller In the Grey and the war movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which also stars Reacher's Alan Ritchson. Ritchie is flying on streaming. Over the years, there have been many Sherlock Holmes adaptations, with movies and TV shows starring the most famous detective in fiction. Some of those have completely reinvented the character and his supporting cast, while others have simply plucked Sherlock out of his original time period to do a modern take on the detective, as was the case for Benedict Cumberbatch's popular Sherlock. Ritchie helmed two Sherlock Holmes movies set during the Victorian era, with Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock and Jude Law as John Watson. Recently, 2009's Sherlock Holmes started trending again, but that streaming era has now ended. Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes Is No Longer A Top 10 Hit According to data from FlixPatrol, Sherlock Holmes has finally left Apple TV's global Top 10 Movies list. The detective movie's last time on the coveted chart was on Thursday, October 8, when the first Sherlock Holmes movie directed by Ritchie stood as the 9th most-watched movie on Apple TV worldwide (per FlixPatrol). The period mystery film became a global hit when it was first released in theaters, finishing its worldwide box office run with a massive $524 million haul on a reported budget of $90 million. The movie's success led to a sequel, 2011's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Since then, fans have been avidly asking for Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes 3 to get made, but that movie is stuck in development hell, and if Downey ever returns as the detective, the franchise's updates claim it will be with Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman) at the helm, not Ritchie. With Sherlock Holmes out of Apple TV's charts, that list is led by John Cena's Matchbox and includes movies like Mayday, Spider-Man: Far from Home, Ready Player One, The Gorge, and more. According to FlixPatrol, 2009's Sherlock Holmes is still trending on Apple TV in 35 countries. Sherlock Holmes is available to buy or rent on VOD in the United States. Ritchie Remains One Of The Keys To Sherlock's Modern Success While Sherlock Holmes might have dropped out of Apple TV's global charts, it should not take too long for Ritchie to find streaming success again with a franchise entry. That said, it will happen through one of Prime Video's biggest new TV shows of 2026, Young Sherlock. Also a period piece, like the Downey movies, Young Sherlock saw Hero Fiennes Tiffin's Sherlock Holmes take on his first case. The detective series was renewed for season 2, which is expected to debut in 2027, though an official release date has yet to be announced. As such, Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes future looks bright. Release Date December 25, 2009 Runtime 129 minutes Director Guy Ritchie Writers Simon Kinberg, Anthony Peckham, Lionel Wigram, Michael Robert Johnson, Arthur Conan Doyle Producers Joel Silver, Steve Clark-Hall, Dan Lin, Susan Downey Sequel(s) Sherlock Holmes 2, Sherlock Holmes 3 Franchise(s) Sherlock Holmes
