Iran war powers resolution passes House with seven Republican defections

House Democrats successfully passed a resolution directing President Donald Trump to end the Iran war for a third time, with three new Republicans breaking with the president from the usual four.The resolution passed 220-204 with seven Republicans supporting the measure, three more than backed the legislation in two previous votes. Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY), Tom Barrett (R-MI), Warren Davidson (R-OH), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), along with new “yes” votes Reps. Nancy Mace (R-SC), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), and Zach Nunn (R-IA) broke with GOP leadership to support the measure.The resolution directs Trump to end hostilities in Iran and was pushed by Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO), who said Democrats would force “vote after vote after vote,” to rein in Trump’s war powers. The war is now in its seventh month. Crow continued, “We’re not going to stop because Americans, Republicans and Democrats alike, by the way, this is one of the most bipartisan issues in America — Republicans and Democrats alike have had enough, and we’re going to push for votes so that they know, just like we’re going to do today, they know where their representative stands.”The vote came the same day that Massie, who lost his primary bid in May, introduced articles of impeachment against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, largely for the secretary’s role in the Iran war.The Kentucky Republican said by fulfilling the orders, Hegseth has demonstrated that he “will remain a threat to the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with the rule of law.”Public support for the Iran war is low, with 71% of Americans saying the United States should not be involved in Iran, according to an Ipsos poll released in April.
