IRAN-linked hackers shut down a UK power plant for four days in a terrifying cyber attack, reports say. But it is understood the facility was relatively small – and that the attack had no overall impact on Britain’s energy supplies. It comes after an Iran-linked hacker group breached FBI drones and threatened to target World Cup team buses this summer, according to a report. Following the UK plant attack, the Government informed the chief executives of power companies, giving advice and direction. The cyber breach is understood to have been flagged to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a public-facing branch of GCHQ. The centre gives advice to companies on keeping national infrastructure safe from foreign adversaries such as Russia. It comes amid a spate of warnings on Russian, Chinese, and North Korean hackers from UK and US intelligence agencies. NHS systems, schools, and commercial manufacturing facilities, including production lines at Jaguar Land Rover, have all been affected. Chilling hacker groups linked to overseas threats have also stolen customer information from retailers as well as voter records from the Electoral Commission. Until now, no hacker is thought to have ever successfully brought a British power plant to a total standstill. The major hack attack in the US sparked floods at dozens of wastewater treatment plants. Some regional authorities were forced to advise customers to boil their water before consuming it. On July 26 in Minnesota, the first breach was reported. It was followed by a string of copycat attacks in Michigan, Georgia, South Dakota and New Jersey. Government sources told local media the threat was likely to have originated from Tehran.
