Intocable to Headline Mexico’s Independence Day Celebration at the Zócalo: ‘Are You Ready, CDMX?!’

The Texas-based group will perform in the country's main public square. Intocable Chino Lemus Trending on Billboard Intocable will be in charge of entertaining the patriotic celebrations in Mexico. The legendary Mexican-American band will take the stage at the Zócalo, the country’s most important public square, on the night of Sept. 15 for the Grito de Independencia (Cry of Independence). President Claudia Sheinbaum made the announcement on Tuesday (Sept. 8) in a video shared on social media. “Sept. 15 is almost here,” Sheinbaum says in the clip, in which she walks into one of the halls of the National Palace wearing headphones, with Intocable’s song “¿Y Todo Para Qué?” playing in the background. The group also shared the news on its social media accounts. “Are you ready, CDMX?! We’ll see you this upcoming September 15 at the Zócalo,” reads a brief message accompanying a video featuring images of the band performing in concert and Mexico City’s main square. This will be the second time the Mexican president will deliver the traditional Grito de Dolores from the National Palace, where she resides and works. The act emulates the call for rebellion against Spanish rule that priest Miguel Hidalgo declared on the morning of Sept. 16, 1810, in Guanajuato. The winners of the second edition of the government-sponsored talent contest México Canta will perform as openers for Intocable. The final round of the competition will take place Sunday (Sept. 13) at the Auditorio Nacional, according to an announcement made by the Mexican government’s Ministry of Culture. Intocable joins a long list of national and international acts who have performed in the second-largest public square in the world, after Tiananmen Square in Beijing. This includes Paul McCartney, Justin Bieber, Manu Chao, Shakira, Rosalía, Café Tacvba, Fito Páez, Residente and the late icon of Mexican regional music, Vicente Fernández. This summer, Intocable became the Latin band with the most Diamond certifications under the RIAA’s Latin Program, holding the second-highest count overall, behind only Bad Bunny. The group also unveiled its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in the recording category. The record for the largest attendance at free concerts held at the Zócalo belongs to Colombian superstar Shakira, who drew 400,000 attendees on March 1 this year. She is followed by the Argentine rock band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, who gathered 300,000 people on June 3, 2023, surpassing Grupo Firme, who had set the previous record with 280,000 attendees in September 2022, according to official figures.
