India’s first dedicated Quantum and AI University campus to come up in Amaravati

The campus will focus on Quantum Technologies, AI, and Semiconductors, integrating education, research, skilling, innovation and entrepreneurship. | Photo Credit: Representational Image Amaravati is set to host India’s first dedicated Quantum and Artificial Intelligence (AI) University campus, with the Government of Andhra Pradesh approving the establishment of an advanced technology campus by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Deemed-to-be University under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY).The decision was taken at the CRDA meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at the Secretariat on Thursday.The campus will be developed on 8.5 acres with a proposed investment of ₹730.70 crore over five years, fully proposed to be funded through a Government of India grant-in-aid from MeitY.The campus will focus on Quantum Technologies, AI, Semiconductors and other emerging deep-tech areas, integrating education, research, skilling, innovation and entrepreneurship.Academic and advanced technology skill-development programmes will begin from September 2026 at a temporary facility in Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur, enabling students and professionals to access programmes, while the permanent campus is being developed.Academic programmesThe university will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma and executive programmes in Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication and Security, AI and Machine Learning, Data Science, Semiconductor Fabrication, Chip Design, VLSI, ATMP, Embedded Systems and High-Performance Computing.A major component will be the Quantum Research, Innovation & Incubation Block, spread over about 1.25 lakh sq. ft. It will house facilities for quantum computing and communication, quantum photonics, quantum security, cryogenic systems, high-performance computing, cleanroom and nano-fabrication, semiconductor technologies, chip design and VLSI, data centres, incubation and start-up co-working.Student intakeThe project is expected to train about 8,250 learners over five years, including 1,650 through formal degree programmes and 6,600 through skilling and certification programmes. Annual intake is projected to reach about 3,913 learners by the fifth year.NIELIT proposes collaborations with IIT-Tirupati, IIIT-Sri City, Andhra University and JNTU institutions for academic programmes, research and technology development. The initiative is aligned with the National Quantum Mission, IndiaAI Mission and India Semiconductor Mission.The permanent campus will incorporate solar power generation, solar water heating, energy-efficient utilities, EV charging and scientific waste-management systems, with an objective of moving towards net-zero operations. It will include smart classrooms, laboratories, hostels, an auditorium, sports facilities, a guest house and other infrastructure, including 500-bed residential capacity.The initiative is expected to strengthen Amaravati’s identity as a national destination for Quantum Technologies, AI, Semiconductors and deep-tech innovation, while creating opportunities for students, researchers, start-ups and industry.
