(Photo: PTI, AFP)New Delhi,Oct 16, 2026 07:56 ISTIndia Women begin a new chapter in T20I cricket when they take on Zimbabwe in the opening match of the three-game series in Raipur on Thursday.Fresh from their historic ODI World Cup triumph last year, India will look to carry that winning momentum into the shortest format, where they still have plenty of room for improvement.Under new captain Smriti Mandhana, India will aim to build a stronger identity in T20Is and establish themselves as a consistent force in world cricket. While they remain among the strongest teams in Asia, their inability to consistently overcome top sides such as Australia, England and South Africa has exposed areas that need attention. When Harmanpreet Kaur took over as India's T20I captain from Mithali Raj in 2016, the team was recovering from an early exit at the Women's T20 World Cup on home soil.Over the years, India made significant progress, reaching the final of the tournament. Mandhana will now have the responsibility of taking that development forward and helping the team make the next leap.CAN ANUSHKA KAMILINI GRAB THEIR CHANCES One of India's biggest concerns in T20Is has been their middle-order batting.Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma have often provided flying starts, only for the middle order to struggle to maintain the momentum. With Jemimah Rodrigues still recovering from injury, Anushka Sharma and Gunalan Kamalini have an opportunity to make their presence felt.Anushka previously impressed in South Africa before losing her place in the side. She made a strong statement in the One-Dayers against Australia, scoring 173 runs in three matches, and will be eager to carry that form into the T20I setup. With Harmanpreet approaching the latter stages of her career, performances from Anushka and Kamalini could prove important for India's long-term plans. The series offers both youngsters an opportunity to stake their claims and help address a middle-order concern that has persisted for some time.FOCUS ON NIKI, KALITAThe series also gives India an opportunity to test emerging talent. Niki Prasad and Jintimani Kalita are among the young players who will be keen to make the most of their opportunities after their maiden India call-ups.Niki has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past couple of years. She led India to titles in the inaugural Women's Under-19 Asia Cup and the Under-19 World Cup before earning opportunities with Delhi Capitals in the Women's Premier League. She has also impressed in recent matches for India A, strengthening her case as a middle-order option.Kalita, meanwhile, has earned her call-up after steadily progressing through domestic cricket. She became the first woman cricketer from Assam to secure a WPL contract when Mumbai Indians signed her for Rs 10 lakh at the 2023 auction. She later joined Gujarat Giants as an injury replacement for Titas Sadhu in 2026.Kalita also gained valuable experience during India A's tour of England and the home series against Australia. While Niki's performances at the age-group level and in the WPL have attracted considerable attention, both youngsters offer India options to develop for the future.Niki could also emerge as a potential finishing option alongside Richa Ghosh, an area where India have struggled for consistency.CAN ZIMBABWE SPRING A SURPRISE?While India will start as overwhelming favourites, Zimbabwe will be keen to make the contest competitive.Their recent ODI victory over the West Indies has offered encouragement and demonstrated their ability to challenge stronger opposition. However, Zimbabwe will need to improve on their T20I performances after losing all three matches against the West Indies.Building competitive totals, taking wickets regularly and maintaining discipline in the field will be crucial if they are to trouble India.Nyasha Gwanzura could be one of Zimbabwe's key players with the ball, while captain Josephine Nkomo's all-round abilities and leadership will be vital.Wicketkeeper-batter Modester Mupachikwa and promising batter Kelis Ndhlovu could play important roles in the batting department, with Michelle Mavunga and Francisca Chipare expected to contribute to the bowling effort. For Zimbabwe, the series represents an opportunity to measure themselves against one of the strongest sides in women's cricket. For India, it is about more than securing victories. Mandhana's team will want to identify the right combinations, strengthen their middle order and give young players the confidence to deliver. The challenge is to turn India's potential into consistent performances in the shortest format.RAIPUR PITCH AND WEATHER CONDITIONSRaipur has not hosted a Women's T20I yet, but the city has staged several women's T20 matches. The Senior Women's T20 Challenger Trophy was held there in 2022, with the average score hovering around 130 and the highest total reaching 165. In men's T20 cricket, the average score is around 155.These numbers suggest that bowlers could have a role to play in the upcoming T20I series. There is no chance of rain in Raipur on Thursday. Temperatures are expected to hover around 26 degrees Celsius, with humidity remaining on the higher side at around 70 per cent.INDIA WOMEN VS ZIMBABWE WOMEN HEAD-TO-HEADIndia and Zimbabwe are yet to face each other in Women’s T20Is.WHEN TO WATCH INDIA WOMEN VS ZIMBABWE WOMEN T20I SERIES?All matches in the T20I series between India Women and Zimbabwe Women will start at 7 PM IST.WHERE TO WATCH INDIA WOMEN VS ZIMBABWE WOMEN T20I SERIES?Star Sports Network has the broadcasting rights for the T20I series between India Women and Zimbabwe Women.Live Streaming of the matches will be available on JioHotstar.INDIA WOMEN VS ZIMBABWE WOMEN 1ST T20I PREDICTED XIIndia Women: Smriti Mandhana (C), Shafali Verma, Anushka Sharma, Gunalan Kamalini, Harmanpreet Kaur, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (WK), Prema Rawat, Shree Charani, Kranti Gaud, Nandni SharmaZimbabwe Women: Modester Mupachikwa (wk), Sharne Mayers, Kelis Ndhlovu, Beloved Biza, Chipo-Mugeri Tiripano, Nyasha Gwanzura, Francisca Chipare, Chiedza Dhururu, Josephine Nkomo (C), Loryn Phiri, Nomvelo Sibanda- Ends
