IMD issues orange, red alerts for A.P. as low-pressure area may bring heavy rain in next three days

People take shelter at the RK Beach bus stop during a sudden spell of rain in Visakhapatnam on Monday, amid the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. | Photo Credit: KR DEEPAK The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, has issued orange alerts for the northern districts of Andhra Pradesh for September 22 as the well-marked low pressure area over Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression by Tuesday.According to the weather forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in the districts of Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, ASR, Anakapalli and Kakinada on Tuesday.The intensity of rainfall will increase on September 23, 24 and 25 when the system is likely to intesify further. Except for Rayalaseema, all the other districts are expected to receive widespread or fairly widespread rainfall on these three days. Red alerts have been issued for the districts of Kakinada, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna and Eluru on September 23 and 24 as extremely heavy rainfall is expected at one or two places in the districts on these two days.The other coastal and northern districts have been put on orange alert while no such alerts have been given for the eight districts of Rayalaseema.According to the bulletin from the IMD, the well-marked low pressure area remained over west central and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal at 8.30 a.m. on Monday. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over west central Bay of Bengal by Tuesday morning and further intensify into a deep depression over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by Wednesday. Continuing to move west-northwestwards, the system is very likely to reach near north Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coasts around September 23.Kakinada gets 61 mm rainOn Monday, between 8.30 a.m. and 6 p.m., Sankhavaram in Kakinada received the day’s highest of 60.75 mm, followed by Nandaluru in NTR district with 52.5 mm, Peddapuram in Kakinada 48.25 mm, Durvesi in Nandyal 45.5 mm, Kavvuluru in NTR district 45.36 mm, Ramakuppam in Chittoor district 39.31 mm, and D. Hirehal in Anantapur 35.5 mm. Many other stations in the districts of Anakapalli, Srikakulam, Chittoor, Nandyal, NTR, Markapuram, and SPSR Nellore received light to moderate showers.The A.P.
