I use Google Messages every day. These 5 features make it better

Writing is something she truly adores, and she seeks knowledge in everything she encounters. For me, Google Messages is more than an inbox. From asking my husband what to cook for dinner to coordinating plans with friends and family, this app has quietly become one of those apps I reach for without even thinking. Because so much of my daily communication happens there, even small features can make a noticeable difference. If you use Google Messages as often as I do, here are the features that make everyday conversations less complicated. My husband was right — Google Messages really does feel like a complete package. Google Keep integration My chats are no longer my to-do list Credit: Sanya Shah/How-To Geek “Remember the name of that restaurant we liked?” is the kind of question that can send me scrolling through months of messages. Between addresses, ideas, links, and things I tell myself I’ll remember later, my conversations can quickly become a storage box for information I actually need. That’s where Google Keep comes in. When someone sends me something worth saving, I can save that particular message directly into Google Keep rather than leaving it buried in the chat. This has become even more useful in group chats because, let’s be honest, every group chat is chaos. Someone is making weekend plans, sending a link, or sharing a recommendation. Instead of scrolling back later, I tap the + icon in the chat, choose Google Keep, and boom — it’s saved. My chats can stay chaotic, but not my to-do list. Location Sharing No addresses, directions, or explanations needed Credit: Sanya Shah/How-to-Geek I usually meet my friends at a crowded mall, airport, or unfamiliar café, and this can quickly turn into a game of “Where exactly are you?” Tell me honestly, isn't it frustrating to say “I’m here, turn left, then go behind that building…” a million times? And with plans changing at the last minute, sending an address isn’t always enough. Google Messages makes this easier by letting me share my location directly from a conversation. I just open the chat, tap the + icon, choose Real-time Location, and share my location. The other person can see my live location, which is really handy and keeps updating as I move. It’s a small convenience, but one I appreciate whenever I’m trying to meet someone without the usual back-and-forth. Chat themes I gave my favorite chats a makeover I’m always on my phone, checking emails, messages, Instagram Reels, and more. Since I spend so much time staring at my screen, I like making the apps I use every day feel a little more personal. Google Messages lets me customize the theme of individual chats, including the background and chat colors. I can pick a different theme to give each conversation a different feel. These themes can remind me of the person or moment behind the chat. For example, if I have a group chat with friends planning a trip to Spain, I can add a tomato-themed background to match our plans for the “La Tomatina” festival. Every time someone opens the chat, that small touch keeps the excitement going. Now, all my conversations have their own personality. Voice message transcription Perfect for noisy or quiet places Credit: Sanya Shah/How-to-Geek I’m not always in a place where I can listen to a voice message. Sometimes I’m at a crowded relative’s house where everyone is talking over each other, and I can barely hear the audio. Other times, I’m somewhere quiet — like sitting next to my mom — where playing a voice message out loud would immediately earn me a “Who are you talking to?” So, I’d rather not risk it. That’s when voice message transcription becomes surprisingly useful. Instead of putting on my headphones or waiting until I’m somewhere private, I can simply read what my friend said. I usually use this when a friend sends me a long voice note, and honestly, I don’t want to listen to her voice for two minutes straight. I’d rather quickly read what she has to say. To use it, find the voice message and tap the Transcribe option. The transcription then appears as text alongside the audio. Happy reading rather than listening. Scheduled messages I can send it now without sending it now Credit: Sanya Shah/How-to-Geek I often remember that I need to text someone at the worst possible time — usually late at night when I know I shouldn’t disturb them. I also know I won’t remember in the morning and will inevitably forget. Now I type the message while it's fresh in my mind and schedule it for later. To do this, I type my message, press and hold the Send button, and choose the date and time I want it delivered. This, again, is a small feature, but it saves me from having to rely on my already questionable memory. The app has now become more than just a place where I send and receive texts. It fits into so many parts of my daily communications that I barely think twice about it. What I like most is that these features don’t require me to change how I communicate or rely on another app. They simply make things a little easier, whether I’m keeping up with friends, making plans, or handling everyday chaos. And that’s exactly what I want from my go-to app.
