Hyatt is replacing its 500-point bonus for staying at new hotels with an offer that can be worth several times as much. Starting October 1, members who book the “New Hotel Member Bonus Offer” rate earn double points, up to 25,000 bonus points per stay. At most Hyatt brands, a $300 night earns 1,500 bonus points instead of 500. This is potentially much stronger to me for paid stays, but depends on how the required rate is pricing. For years, Hyatt has offered 500 bonus points per night at participating properties that have recently joined the program. I wrote about the offer when it launched in 2019, as a modest return of the old property-specific “G bonuses.” Those used to offer 500 to 2,000 points per night. You didn’t have to register, and award nights earned it, too. But the reward didn’t increase when you booked a more expensive room or spent more on property. How Much More You Can Earn Under the new offer, Hyatt matches the base points you earn on eligible room rates and incidental charges. At most brands, that’s an extra 5 points per dollar, on top of the usual 5 base points. Eligible Spending Per Night Old Nightly Bonus New Nightly Bonus $100 500 points 500 points $200 500 points 1,000 points $300 500 points 1,500 points $500 500 points 2,500 points $1,000 500 points 5,000 points Spend more than $100 per night in eligible charges and the new bonus is larger, assuming the same room rate. A four-night stay at $500 per night earns 10,000 bonus points, compared with 2,000 under the old offer. Valuing Hyatt points at 1.4 cents apiece, those 10,000 points are worth $140. The old bonus would have been worth $28. You can earn on up to three rooms at a time. And note that Hyatt Studios earns 2.5 base points per dollar, so the extra earning there is 2.5 points per dollar. The old 500 point bonus breaks even at $200 in nightly spend. Be Careful Not To OVerpay For The Points You have to select the “New Hotel Member Bonus Offer” rate. Simply booking a participating hotel won’t earn the bonus. One Mile at a Time checked several properties. At Thompson Rome, the bonus rate was €824 versus a cheaper €696 option, with slightly different cancellation deadlines. At Hyatt House Monroe / Cranbury / South Brunswick and The Clayfield, it beat the standard flexible rate, although prepaid options were cheaper. Award stays lose the old 500-point nightly bonus. Those aren’t booked on this paid promotional rate. Folks that book cheaper rates, like a corporate or AAA rate, lose as well. But for paid nights for many people there’s a lot of upside, though by making the bonus not automatic they’re going to award it to far fewer people. Topics on this page
