Huge ITV gameshow with life-changing £250,000 prize axed after just one season

ITV bosses have axed The Neighbourhood with channel bosses admittingit was such a failure they’ll never make another show like it again. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV festival, Joe Mace, ITV‘s EntertainmentCommissioning Editor said they learned a lesson from the response tothe show, hosted by Graham Norton. Joe said: “We talk about taking risks and then we like to put it intoaction. As a format, people loved the idea of creating a neighbourhoodwhere you were judging people and how they would behave asfamilies…It had a lot of really good ITV ingredients. They’ve beenserved the best in those shows in Love Island and Big Brother and weshould stick to that probably. “There’s a lot of great post-produced reality TV out there, and that’sperhaps not the lane ITV should be in. The 12-part series was described as “a gameshow as you’ve never seenit before”, which promised to “marry high-stakes competition, epicchallenges and relatable domestic drama, to offer a different flavourof reality.” But the viewing figures were poor and it was generally panned by critics.Kevin Lygo, Managing Director, Media and Entertainment, added at thefestival: “Because we’re in a very good position with entertainment –with I’m A Celebrity and Britain’s Got Talent and The Masked Singerand so on – we must take risks with new shows. “And, honestly, if one in eight becomes the next Britain’s Got Talent,that’s a win. So you’ve got to expect that they won’t all work, and itis harder and harder now to bring people to new shows, that’s whyyou’re seeing more and more reboots everywhere.
