Imam Sab, the 101-year-old retired teacher who underwent hip replacement surgery, with orthopaedic surgeon Bhaskar Rao, in Hubballi recently. | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT In what is a record of sorts, Bhaskar Rao, an orthopaedic surgeon from Hubballi, has successfully performed a hip replacement surgery on a 101-year-old man, giving him a new lease of life.Imam Sab, a retired teacher, of Hire Bengideri village at Shiggaon taluk in Haveri district, had a fall in his bathroom, resulting in a hip bone fracture that made him immobile.Although the family had approached various hospitals for treatment, several doctors had advised against going for surgery considering the complications related to his old age.However, when the family approached Dr. Rao, he decided perform the surgery after examining various health parameters.According to Dr. Rao, the hip replacement surgery was performed on July 7, and the patient started walking with the help of a walker on July 8. The retired teacher was discharged from the hospital on the fourth day and when he came for the follow-up on July 16, he was able to walk with the help of walker comfortably.Dr. Rao said that a cobalt-chromium hip implant was used for the hip replacement and the surgery was done with utmost caution considering the age factor.
