Kemp and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson created Power in 2014, and the series quickly became one of Starz's most successful television shows. The 2014 crime drama series ran for six seasons before ending in 2020. Power didn't stop there, and Starz quickly ordered multiple spin-offs. Four television series now exist in the Power universe, encompassing sequels, prequels, and standalone shows. It's great for fans of the series, but if you're new to it, figuring out the correct order to watch all these Power shows could be a bit overwhelming as some seasons start to run through one another. For those new to the series and its spin-offs, Power's timeline is one of the most confusing of the modern TV era. With overlap in the series and spin-offs that operate on different sequences with prequels airing in the middle of shows set in the modern timeline, Power and its spin-offs have led to debate among fans surrounding release order. The franchise can be experienced in multiple ways, either the way that audiences saw it unfold on screen when it aired, or by watching the shows in chronological order by year. Regardless of the choice, Power is worth the watch. Power & Power Book Spinoffs In Release Order Power aired before any of its spinoffs arrived, between 2014 and 2020. These spinoffs, titled "Power Book", began with Power Book II: Ghost, which ran for four seasons from 2020 to 2024. Power Book III: Raising Kanan began in 2021 with its fifth and final season in production. Power Book IV: Force premiered in 2022 and ran for three seasons. Show Title Years Seasons Power 2014–2020 6 Power Book II: Ghost 2020–2024 4 Power Book III: Raising Kanan 2021–present 5 Power Book IV: Force 2022–2026 3 Power centers around James "Ghost" St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), a drug dealer who wishes to leave the world of crime and pursue his dream of owning a nightclub. However, Ghost ends up having to balance both careers while navigating his struggles and the morality of his actions. Meanwhile, Power Book II: Ghost continues the first show's story by focusing on Ghost's son, Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.) It's a sequel to the original series and follows Tariq St. Patrick as he starts his new life, trying to shed his father's overwhelming legacy. Power Book III: Raising Kanan serves as a prequel set in the 1990s and revolves around Ghost's rival, Kanan Stark (Mekai Curtis), and his entrance into the drug-dealing scene. Power Book IV: Force tells the story of Ghost's partner and friend, Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora), as he leaves New York and takes his trade to Chicago. Power & Power Book Spinoffs In Chronological Order Watching Power in chronological order is where things can get complicated. It starts off simply enough. Power Book III: Raising Kanan happens before Power and the rest of the franchise. Then comes all six seasons of Power. After that, things become a bit more unorthodox. Power Book II: Ghost and Power Book IV: Force take place concurrently. Which means that if you intend to watch the series in its chronological order, you will be flipping back and forth between Book II and Book IV. The order to watch them chronologically can be found below: All seasons of Power Book III: Raising Kanan All seasons of Power Power Book II: Ghost season 1 Power Book IV: Force season 1 Power Book II: Ghost season 2 Power Book IV: Force season 2 Power Book II: Ghost season 3 Power Book II: Ghost season 4 Power Book IV: Force season 3 While Ghost and Force are happening around the same time, the shows are set in different series, and the casts and storylines don't overlap for the most part. With that in mind, it could make sense to watch all of Ghost before watching Force, as Ghost debuted first. The Best Order To Watch Power & All Power Book Spinoffs The best way to watch Power, Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and Power Book IV: Force is up to the viewer. Each Power series is its own story with complete arcs and finales, so there is no real wrong way to view them. However, I almost always suggest the release order is the correct order. The release order of a show, particularly when the showrunner and creative team remain the same throughout, is usually how they envisioned the story. There are things in Book III that make much more sense if you know what happens in Power and Book II, despite the series being set in the past. Watching the show chronologically is a fun exercise after you've seen the entire series and are trying to get a different view. If it's your first time watching Power, watch it as 50 Cent and Courtney A. Kemp intended you to watch it, in standard release order. How Much Does That Power Watch Order Matter? How much the watch order of Power matters ultimately, it depends on which show in the wider Power universe is being discussed. As a starting point, most viewers find that watching Power first is the best way to gain the most enjoyment from the rest of the franchise. Power introduces the characters that the other spinoffs feature. Watching all seasons before moving on to the next chapters ensures that all the references and nods will be picked up by viewers. Knowing the plot of Power is also important for some of the spinoffs, but not for others — though each book of Power is self-contained enough that the plots can be followed without watching the original. The most independent is Power Book III: Raising Kanan. As a prequel, watching the history prior to watching Power is straightforward. Fans who discovered the show in this order might find the rise and fall of Kanan Stark an engaging two-show arc. The other shows, Force and Ghost, sometimes lean a little more heavily on Power. Ghost is the spinoff that the watch order perhaps matters most for, as many of the events in Tariq St. Patrick's story don't hold the same thematic weight without the narrative of the main show for context. Force can be enjoyed without having seen Power, as it follows Tommy in Chicago rather than NY, which means an almost completely new roster of characters. However, watching Power beforehand also means that Tommy's journey is much more understandable, and so makes Ghost much more enjoyable as a series. The Future Of The Power Franchise The first four shows in the Power universe are complete, but there are at least two more in some stage of early production. Power: Origins is set to take the audience back to the very beginning. It will focus on the characters that originally made the franchise famous in the first iteration of the show: Ghost and Tommy. Future Power Spinoffs Title Status Power: Origins Production Power: Legacy Pre-Production Power Book V: Influence Canceled It’s a break from how the Power shows are structured since each season typically focuses on one protagonist with multiple antagonists. This time around, two characters will lead the show. Production for a super-sized season 1 began in December 2025 (via Deadline). Another spinoff, Power: Legacy, was announced in June 2025 and will be set sometime after Book IV (via Deadline). Power Book V: Influence was planned but was canceled in early 2024. It’s possible that the spinoff fizzled because the character it was intended to spotlight, Rashad Tate (Larenz Tate), was featured heavily in Power Book II: Ghost instead. Where To Watch Power All four Power shows are available on Starz. As the original Power emerged as one of the best shows on Starz, it is not surprising that the network has kept the entire franchise together for fans to watch in whatever order they choose. All six seasons of the original Power series are also available on Hulu. Release Date 2014 - 2020-00-00 Network Starz Directors Hernán Otaño, Bart Wenrich, Kari Skogland, Sanford Bookstaver, Shana Stein, Kieron Hawkes, Slick Naim, Ami Canaan Mann, Anthony Hemingway, David Rodriguez, M.J.
