Head coach Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame take a 10-game winning streak into the new campaign.CJ Carr was the preseason Heisman favorite before Miami receiver Malachi Toney and Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith stole the spotlight the past two days. Carr threw for 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns with six interceptions as a sophomore last season. He posted an 83.4 QBR, which was ninth in the nation. Notre Dame lost the rushing combo of NFL first-round draft pick Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, in addition to three of its top four receiving targets. Despite the turnover, the offensive line is expected to be one of the best in the nation. The Fighting Irish hope to find solace in junior running back Aneyas Williams, who will bear the weight of the ground game. They finished 4-8 last season. Wisconsin has welcomed in 34 new transfers and will need to mesh on the fly against what figures to be an elite opponent out of the gate. Senior quarterback Colton Joseph has set up shop after two years at Old Dominion. He threw for 2,624 yards and 21 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in 2025. For context, five of those 10 picks were courtesy of national champion Indiana and James Madison. In addition to his aerial numbers, Joseph scurried 153 times for 1,007 yards and 13 touchdowns. Joseph’s targets will be raw. Wisconsin lost all four of their leading receivers from last season. The Badgers’ defense was formidable in 2025 and looks to carry over with senior linebacker Sebastian Cheeks and sophomore linebacker Mason Posa anchoring a strong pass rush. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Wisconsin left tackle Kevin Haywood (lower body) is expected to play. Right guard Emerson Mandell (foot) is expected to miss the contest. Mandell started 12 games last year. These two schools last met in 2021. Notre Dame stormed back after trailing by three points in the fourth quarter, cruising to a 41-13 victory at Soldier Field. The Fighting Irish lead the all-time series, 9-6-2.
