The Chiefs are looking to return to form after an out-of-character campaign that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. All eyes will be on three-time Super Bowl champion Mahomes, who will be making his first start since tearing his ACL and LCL 274 days ago. He did not play a single snap in the preseason. Kansas City added Super Bowl 60 MVP running back Kenneth Walker III from the Seahawks this offseason. He rushed for 1,027 yards and five touchdowns on 221 carries in 2025. Walker is expected to see a heavy workload as Mahomes slowly works his way back into form. The franchise centerpiece’s go-to-guy, tight end Travis Kelce, also returns to try and reignite his status as a top tight end in the NFL. Key receiver Rashee Rice looks to stay on the field after missing half of last season, but still managed 53 receptions for 571 yards and five touchdowns. Chiefs left tackle Josh Simmons is unlikely to play due to a back injury. Nix is back and healthy. He threw for 3,931 yards and 25 touchdowns, while also tossing 11 interceptions. Nix also kept the defense honest with 356 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Denver’s defense has a reputation for being a nightmare. They have especially found success in man coverage against Kansas City’s receiving core. The Broncos have recorded back-to-back seasons with at least 63 sacks. The unit is led by linebacker Nick Bonitto and defensive lineman Zach Allen. Bonitto finished fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting last season, while Allen led the NFL in QB knockdowns. The secondary, anchored by Patrick Surtain II, allowed a second-best 6.1 yards per pass attempt last season. Linebacker Johnathon Cooper remains on the NFL Commissioner Exempt List after pleading not guilty to domestic violence charges.
