Star Wars Zero Company: Complete Guide To Astromechs Published Aug 27, 2026, 11:30 AM EDT Astromechs are unlike any other operators in Star Wars Zero Company. You don't have access to them right away, and you have to jump through an extra hoop to get them. Once you have them, it isn't immediately obvious how you can get the most utility out of them either. Here's everything you need to know about how to unlock astromechs in Star Wars Zero Company, and how to use them during missions. What Are Astromechs? Astromechs are those adorable R2-D2-like droids you see across Star Wars media. Here, they've been adapted to fit into Star Wars Zero Company's XCOM-like combat. Unlike all of the other operators, astromechs have no primary fire. They can only attack by sending out mines and tossing grenades. Otherwise, they are completely support-based, buffing teammates and giving them additional AP. Astromechs also tend to have more movement than other operators. On top of that, they can fly up to rooftops that others can only get to if there's a ladder. How To Unlock Astromechs As you'll quickly notice, there's a broken-down astromech in The Den. Interact with it, and Hawks should say something about repairing the droid when you have the credits. From there, you have to wait until you have access to the upgrades terminal early on in the campaign. Once you do, spend some credits to build the droid repair bay. In the next cycle (after completing a mission), the droid repair bay will be up and running. You will now have access to an astromech, BR-1. From this point on, other astromechs will appear in the recruitment terminal. You can also make your own in the character database screen in the main menu, and then recruit them. How To Use Astromechs In Combat Astromechs vary depending on their build, but on the whole, you're getting an operator whose job it is to support the entire operation and buff teammates. More combat-oriented astromechs, like BR-1, come equipped with a whole lot of explosives - more than any other operator has access to. Your first mission with BR-1 in your party will be a breath of fresh air, as the little guy can dish out area-of-effect damage like nothing else. Droids like this can also deploy smoke to cloud an enemy's sight, making it harder for them to hit their teammates, which is great if you have another operator in a tricky spot. If this is how you want to play your astromech, it's a good idea to get them to high ground. Depending on the enemy type, there might not be any other unit on the map who can reach them, letting them rain grenades on the map without being in the firing line. And even if someone can reach them, they have more than enough movement to run to cover. The best ability that astromechs have at their disposal is restoring AP. They have the ability that other operators have that restores AP to a single teammate, but they also have another that restores AP for the entire team all at once. Better yet, it doesn't matter where the astromech is, as it affects every single teammate regardless of distance. It uses up ten advantage, but it's more than worth it. For this reason, I would usually use my astromech last. Have everyone else do their turns, and then have the astromech give everyone an extra AP point if you have enough advantage. They could also use their other skills to polish things off before ending the turn, like using a grenade to get rid of a swarm of weaker enemies, or cloaking a tougher enemy in smoke. With that said, I wouldn't say astromechs are essential for every mission. If you want to rush in there and take everyone out, sure, but if it's a war of attrition, they might not help you out too much. Just like any other operator, they will run out of grenades, and then they can't deal any damage. You also can't heal astromechs through traditional means. They can self-heal, but that's it - your medic won't be able to help them much. Speaking of medics, don't think that astromechs replace them just because they're supportive. They're all about controlling the battlefield and helping your team help themselves, rather than healing them.
