Eve Johnson Houghton’s colt shaped better than fifth suggests behind Notable Speech over 7f at York last week, staying on strongly before the line came too soon. He was an excellent fifth in the Sussex Stakes over C&D on good to firm but handles juice underfoot too. He gets weight as a three-year-old which helps. FORTY YEARS ON (2.00 Goodwood, treble) Ran a cracker on comeback when winning a big-field Newbury handicap. George Scott’s progressive filly travelled powerfully before quickening clear to score with lots in hand. That was her fourth win in five starts and came after nine months off, so there could be plenty more in the tank. She handles good to firm ground, the 7f trip is ideal and stall two looks a major positive. Templegate’s verdicts (ITV4, 1.15pm-4.00pm) SANDOWN Most read in Sport 1.40 THI QAR can star after a really promising Newmarket debut. The Gosdens’ pricey filly shaped like a winner waiting to happen when beaten just a neck over this trip on good to firm three weeks ago. She showed her inexperience but kept responding and it was a narrow defeat. That experience should sharpen her plenty and she can get off the mark. The obvious danger is Tall Trees. She was second over 7f on good to firm before a close third in a Listed race over this course and distance, meeting trouble before staying on strongly. A repeat of that would take her close. Flower Show is the most interesting newcomer. The Dubawi filly represents Charlie Appleby and is out of a Queen Mary winner. Bassrah should appreciate this step up to 7f after her Yarmouth second but needs to find more. 2.15 MY LOVE IS KING looks ready to make his mark in handicaps after mixing it in stronger company. The Gosden colt chased home Maltese Cross at Newbury before stepping up when second in a Listed over 1m2f at Newmarket. He failed to land a blow when eighth in the Group 3 Hampton Court at Royal Ascot, but this is much more his level. Kokbastau is a danger after thrashing a 12-runner Kempton handicap by five lengths. He is improving rapidly although this drop from 1m4f poses a question. Alcarath went down by just a neck over C&D in June and commands respect, while King’s Charter returns to a suitable trip after two solid Meydan efforts. Calendar Girl is another threat. She made it four wins from five when taking a Haydock Listed on return and has already landed a Group 3. Rain could be an issue for her as she likes it fast. 3.30 MIA FANTASIA looks magic in the Group 3 BetMGM Solario Stakes (3.30 Sandown). Marco Ghiani stays on this talented two-year-old after getting a real tune out of him at York last time. The pair won a hot nursery handicap with ease and he looks overpriced going up in class. Rock Montreal cost Godolphin a million as a yearling and looked promising on debut at Yarmouth last time, while unbeaten Sonic Angel is another coming here on the back of an impressive win. GOODWOOD 1.25 RHYTHM OF MY HEART can improve past these now tackling the mile. David Menuisier’s filly was well backed on her Kempton debut and shaped with real promise, overcoming a slow start and greenness to run on strongly for second over 7f. Her stamina-packed pedigree screams that this extra furlong will suit and she should know much more this time. Lily Pink is the danger after missing by just a neck over a mile at Newmarket on debut and is also open to plenty of improvement. Majestic Flame caught the eye over 7f here at Glorious Goodwood, finishing with running left, while Thespian Queen showed promise when second at Kempton. Aalto is another to respect after following his Bunbury Cup victory with a solid third at Ascot. 2.35 CLASSICAL ALLUSION could give Andrew Balding another big win. He showed promise when sixth behind the improving Kokbastau at Kempton. He was hard to settle and that proved costly in the closing stages. He’s had a little nudge down the weights and has shown his best over this distance. High Degree should be thereabouts after first-time cheekpieces sparked a solid Pontefract win. He stays 1m2f and should be at home over this longer trip. Too Soon produced a career-best when winning over 1m4f at Epsom. Both his victories have come on soft ground so rain would bring her right into the reckoning. Tony Montana ran a promising fourth over 1m2f here last month and should be sharper now. He’s a player if seeing out the extra quarter-mile. Haku could be overpriced after being beaten half a length in fair company at Newmarket over this trip last time. 3.10 ZAVATERI can take advantage of this drop from Group 1 level and prove himself a top-class miler. Qirat also has an excellent record here and his Lennox fourth reads well before the Sussex Stakes came too soon the following day. It would be no shock to see him bounce back.
