These makeshift vehicles can go faster than 60mph on the dangerous route, which features bumpy hills. The eight injured in the chaos were rushed to hospitals in Atuntaqui and Ibarra for treatment. Event organiser Steven Terán said safety measures had been put in place for the race but acknowledged that competitions of this type carry inherent risks. Soapbox cart racing is very popular in hilly, rally-crazed Ecuador. The phenomenon, which is dubbed Carrera Coches de Madera – or “wooden car race”, dates back to the 1940s, according to Quito Informa. Certain events, like the one involving the crash, have carts crewed by two riders. One is responsible for steering, while other push with their feet in the slower sections.
