Hit Rick & Morty-Like Series Gets Ambitious Future Update From Creator After Divisive Finale

Co-created and spearheaded by the Rick and Morty alum, the sci-fi series revolved around the titular family of aliens from the Planet Shlorp as they made a new home on Earth following the destruction of their planet, with the mission to terraform the planet through their infant-like Pupa. As they adjust to their new setting, they also grow as a dysfunctional family, eventually questioning the point of their mission. With an ensemble cast led by Justin Roiland, who was replaced by Dan Stevens following his abuse allegations, Thomas Middleditch, Mary Mack and Sean Giambrone, Solar Opposites was a smash hit for Hulu, scoring consistently widespread acclaim from critics and solid viewership, including setting a record for the streamer's most-watched original comedy premiere. After five successful seasons, Hulu confirmed the show would be coming to an end with season 6, with the finale being met with mixed reactions from audiences. Now, in an interview with ScreenRant's Brandon Zachary for his Golden Axe adaptation at Paramount+, McMahan was asked about the chances of a Solar Opposites revival. The creator chuckled as he teased that the Solar-Opposites "are not getting out that easy," saying that "every time you think they're out, they get pulled back in," and has some ideas for the show's potential future: Mike McMahan: I love that ending. I will defend that ending for everybody in the world. I have — if they ever let us bring it back, that ending is going to pay off in a really fun way. With many storylines to wrap up, Solar Opposites season 6 sought to give viewers a satisfying send-off for the series with its final three episodes. Christina Hendricks' Cherie and the other members of The Wall, realizing that Pezlie will die if turned to normal size, elect to give up their quest for Yumyulack's shrink ray, though are successful in at least convincing the teenage alien to help them enjoy a better life by providing supplies other than candy. As for the Solar-Opposites' central mission, while Korvo initially destroys the substance that the Pupa needs to terraform the Earth, the SilverCops arrive in the show's finale to reveal that Planet Shlorp's destruction was actually part of an endless scam in which the SilverCops send an asteroid to destroy a Shlorpian planet in order to loot what's left behind. Almost killed by the group for abandoning their mission, the family's former neighbor-turned-galactic-hero Glen is able to stop the SilverCops with the help of the GoldCops. Even still, while Solar Opposites season 6 largely brought things to a close, two episodes prior did offer one of the biggest unanswered questions for McMahan and his team to pick back up with is the teased destruction of Earth 90 years in the future. Rather than being from the Pupa, the flash-forward hints that the world's destruction was "accidentally" caused by Cherie, with an elderly Pezlie only briefly teasing the full story while keeping the actual events unknown. Though not poorly received, Solar Opposites season 6's finale did find itself continuing the trend of TV finales that left viewers divided. From Buffy the Vampire Slayer destroying the entire town of Sunnydale to Lost's Purgatory twist, some shows found their audiences debating how effectively they ended their long TV runs. For Solar Opposites, the biggest complaint seemed to stem from finding the final season somewhat rushed, particularly the conclusion of The Wall's arc after multiple seasons of build-up, even if finding the family's happy individual endings still satisfying. Given how successful the show was for Hulu through its run, to the point it also received four holiday specials, the door certainly doesn't seem like it'd be closed for Solar Opposites to make a comeback at some point in the future. Additionally, with McMahan no longer having his time split between the sci-fi series and the similarly acclaimed Star Trek: Lower Decks after it came to a close with season 5, the creator may have the chance to build out the ambitious plans he teased above.
